Breakers bounce back
Tennis legend Pete Sampras will be joining a winning team Saturday at The Tennis Club Newport Beach.
The Newport Beach Breakers responded to their first loss of the season with a 23-14 road win against the Kansas City Explorers Friday, improving to 3-1 in the World Team Tennis league.
The Breakers, atop the Western Conference, won four of the five sets, the only loss coming in women’s singles as Anne Keothavong fell to Madison Brengle, 3-5.
Lester Cook opened with a 5-2 win over Alex Kuznetsov in men’s singles. Cook later teamed with Travis Rettenmaier to score a 5-3 victory over Kuznetsov andRicardo Mello.
Keothavong and Marie-Eve Pelletier won the women’s doubles set, 5-2, over Madison Brengle and Kveta Peschke. Pelletier and Rettenmaier also won, 5-2, in mixed doubles against Peschke and Kuznetsov.
Sampras will be the marquee player for the Breakers against the New York Sportimes at 7:15 p.m. Martina Hingis is expected to play for the Sportimes.
