College Roundup: UCI gets first NCAA win

UC Irvine 15, Iona 4

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Danielle Warde scored five goals to help the No. 5-seeded Anteaters to their first NCAA Tournament win in the fifth-place semifinal Saturday at the University of Michigan.

UCI (22-9) will face Indiana in the fifth-place match Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

Iona is 30-9.

Jessy Cardey added two goals to help the Anteaters eclipse the UCI record for goals in a season set in 2009 when they scored 314. The 15 goals put UCI at 329 with one match remaining.

UCI goalie Morgan Vickers, a Newport Harbor High product, had five saves.

BASEBALL

UC Irvine 7, UC Santa Barbara 4

SANTA BARBARA — Freshmen Andrew Thurman and Jimmy Litchfield combined for eight innings of one-hit, shutout relief to lift the visiting Anteaters, who clinched the three-game Big West Conference series that concludes Sunday.

Thurman allowed one hit, struck out three and did not walk a batter to improve to 3-3.

Litchfield struck out two in 1 2/3 hitless innings without a walk.

Starter Matt Whitehouse allowed four earned runs and six hits in three-plus innings.

Junior catcher Ronnie Shaeffer drove in two runs, while junior second baseman Tommy Reyes and senior third baseman Brian Hernandez had two hits apiece for UCI (33-13, 12-5 in conference).

D.J. Crumlich, Jordan Fox and Reyes had one RBI each for the winners, whose nine hits were all singles.

UCSB fell to 21-23, 6-11.

MEN’S TRACK & FIELD

Big West Conference Championships

IRVINE — UC Irvine senior Colin Hacker and the 4x400-meter relay earned titles Saturday at UCI.

Hacker’s kick on the final lap carried him to victory in the 1,500 with a time of 3 minutes, 44.44 seconds.

Teammate Sam Hyams was third in the same event (3:46.32).

Junior Charles Jock was in fourth place at the final turn on the anchor leg of the winning relay, but passed three runner to break with a 45.1-second split. UCI’s winning time was 3:10.28, including Napoleon Greene, Chris Carson and Dominic Jester.

Jock was second in the 800 in 1:45.40 as UC Santa Barbara’s Ryan Martin (1:45.34) pulled an upset. Both broke the meet record and the stadium record.

Nick Jennings was third in the pole vault (16 feet, 9 1/4 inches) while Hacker was fourth (14:43.83) and Steven Melena eighth (12:47.22) in the 5,000.

Greene was fourth in the 400 hurdles (52.74), Freddie Gladney was fifth in the 110 high hurdles (14.88) and Carson was sixth in the 200 in 22.05.

UCI was sixth with 79 team points as Long Beach State won with 177.5.

WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD

Big West Conference Championships

IRVINE — UC Irvine sophomore Ericka Nowell won the 400-meter hurdles in 58.82 seconds to pace the Anteaters on Saturday at UCI.

Maggie Newton-Neal was second in the 800 in 2:10.96.

Alishia Misiaita was second in the shot put (49 feet, 6 1/2 inches) and Madeline LeDuc was third in the triple jump (40-5 1/2).

Jennica Smith was eighth in the triple jump (36-11 1/2).

Amber Middleton was third in the 100 hurdles (14.04) while Sanmisola George (24.93) and Breeanca Fleming (25.22) were fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 200.

George was eighth in the 1,500 in 4:35.53.

UCI was seventh with 75 points. Cal State Northridge (165) won the title.
