Local teams earn preseason CIF rankings

Four local prep teams, Edison boys’ soccer and girls’ water polo, Fountain Valley girls’ water polo and Ocean View girls’ soccer, enter the winter sports season with CIF preseason top 10 rankings in their respective sports.

In the Soccer Coaches Assn. preseason boys’ soccer rankings, Edison is ranked fourth in Division 1. The 10 is headed by Santa Barbara, followed by JSerra, Harvard-Westlake, Edison, San Clemente, Mater Dei, Bell Gardens, Dos Pueblos, El Toro and Long Beach Millikan.

In the girls’ preseason poll, Ocean View is ranked fourth in Division 6. St. Margaret’s leads the poll and is followed by San Jacinto, Sierra Vista, Ocean View, Los Amigos, Segerstrom, Alverno, San Marino, La Canada and Oxford Academy.

In the coaches preseason water polo rankings, Edison is No. 8 and Fountain Valley is ninth in Division 1. Dos Pueblos is No. 1, followed by Los Alamitos, Corona del Mar, Newport Harbor, Santa Barbara, Laguna Beach, Foothill, Edison, Palos Verdes and Fountain Valley.

Surf City USA Marathon announces charity run

The Surf City USA Marathon announced the addition of a One-Mile Charity Run on Feb. 6, which is Super Bowl Sunday. Held in conjunction with the sixth annual Run for Mobility, staged by Irvine-based Free Wheelchair Mission, participants in the one-mile run will start and finish on Pacific Coast Highway.

“The one-mile charity run/walk is dedicated to participants raising funds and awareness for their favorite charities,” Surf City USA Marathon GM Amy Tomchak said in a statement.”

Huntington Valley LL signup date approaching

Huntington Valley Little League will hold in-person registration for its 2011 season from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 11 at league fields, 9191 Pioneer Ave., Huntington Beach.
