‘Eaters’ Taylor honored

UC Irvine senior forward Tanya Taylor shared Player of the Week honors in Big West Conference women’s soccer.

Taylor had a goal and two assists in a pair of 2-0 road victories against San Francisco (Sunday) and Fresno State (Friday). Her goal against Fresno State was the game-winner.

She leads the Anteaters (6-1-2) with five goals and three assists.

UCI senior goalkeeper Danielle de Seriere was named to Top Drawer Soccer’s national team of the week after posting consecutive shutouts.

Ex-Sea King shines

Former Corona del Mar High baseball star Jake Lemmerman has been named MVP of the Pioneer League after a standout season for the Ogden (Utah) Raptors, a rookie-league affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Lemmerman, chosen in the fifth round (172nd overall) in the June draft out of Duke, hit .363 with 12 home runs, 47 runs batted in and a league-best 24 doubles in his first professional season.

The Newport Beach native ranked among the Pioneer League’s top five in runs (69), hits (94), doubles, total bases (158), on-base percentage (.434), slugging percentage (.610) and OPS (1.044). Playing in 66 games at shortstop, he helped Ogden set a club record for wins and advance to the league championship series, won by Helena (Montana).

Nick Atkins, a former Vanguard University outfielder, was another key performer for the Raptors. Atkins hit .315 with a team-leading 15 homers. He drove in 46 runs in 47 games and 27 of his 56 hits went for extra bases. His OPS was 1.060.

Fontein recognized

UC Irvine junior men’s goalkeeper Andrew Fontein was named National Player of the Week by the National Soccer Coaches Assn. of America on Wednesday.

Fontein recorded three shutouts for the then- No. 8-ranked Anteaters (5-1), and was not scored upon through the first five games.

Also named Big West Conference Defensive Player of the Week, Fontein made 14 combined saves in wins over Air Force, Oakland and Wisconsin.

His 14 career shutouts match a school career record.
