Girls’ volleyball team off to strong start
The Laguna Beach High girls’ volleyball team won five of eight matches last weekend at the Queens Court Tournament. The preseason event, now in its second year, drew more than 100 Division 1 and 2 varsity, junior varsity and frosh-soph teams, was held at the American Sports Center in Anaheim.
The Breakers competed in Division 1 and won all five of their games by sweep. They scored victories over Arcadia (25-20, 25-17), ML King (25-23, 25-15), Thousand Oaks (25-21, 25-19), rival Corona del Mar (25-17, 25-19) and Redlands East Valleay (25-21, 25-18). Their losses were to Harvard-Westlake (21-25, 17-25), Orange Lutheran (18-25, 18-25) and in a tough battle, to Edison (29-31, 25-16, 12-15). Edison won the Division 1 title, Brentwood the Division 2 title and Orange Lutheran the frosh-soph title.
Breakers fourth in preseason football poll
The CIF Southern Section released its football preseason Top 10 polls Tuesday, and Laguna Beach will begin the 2010 season ranked fourth in the Southern Division. The poll is headed by Garden Grove of the Garden Grove League. The Breakers were the lone team from the Orange Coast League to make the poll. League rival Estancia was listed among six schools as others to watch.
Main Beach Laguna Volleyball Club will be holding free open tryouts for boys ages 13 to 18 Sept. 11 at Saddleback College. All club teams will play in Southern California Volleyball Assn. fall season tournaments. For more information, call (949) 637-6467.
