Boys’ Volleyball: Seven earn All-CIF honors
Corona del Mar High senior outside hitter Weston Nielsen and Newport Harbor junior outside hitter Cody Caldwell each earned first-team All-CIF Southern Section Division I laurels in boys’ volleyball. Sage Hill School junior outside hitter Mattias Russo-Larsson made the Division V first team.
The two players receiving second-team recognition in Division I were CdM senior outside hitter Joey Booth and Newport Harbor senior setter Jackson Carmack.
CdM sophomore opposite/setter Parker Brown was on the Division I third team.
Sage Hill freshman opposite Kent Kawaguchi was a Division V second-team pick.
The three Sea Kings earning All-CIF praise helped CdM (23-9) reach the semifinals of the CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs and its eighth straight Pacific Coast League championship.
Nielsen, who is bound for UC Santa Barbara, led the Sea Kings with 294 kills. He recorded 122 digs, 49 blocks and 37 service aces.
Nielsen shared the Pacific Coast League MVP honor with Booth.
Caldwell and Carmack led the Sailors (20-10) to the quarterfinals of the Division I playoffs, where they lost in five games at home to eventual champion Loyola of Los Angeles.
Caldwell finished with 513 kills, 121 digs, 55 blocks and 50 aces. Carmack amassed 990 assists.
The USC-bound Booth finished with 247 kills, 120 digs, 36 blocks and 31 aces. Brown totaled 397 assists, 134 kills, 94 digs, 33 blocks and 33 aces.
Russo-Larsson and Kawaguchi played vital roles in Sage Hill (17-10) advancing to the quarterfinals in Division V.
