High School Softball: Quintet collects honors

Three Costa Mesa High softball players, along with a pair of Estancia players, have been named first-team All-Orange Coast League.

Mustangs senior Kira Mitani and juniors Alex Krohnfeldt and Sami Feinstein earned first-team status, as did Estancia senior pitcher Cheyanne Flores and shortstop Amy Hartwell.

Costa Mesa Coach Nichole Maddox said her first-teamers were three of her best hitters. Mitani, a pitcher, also finished the year 17-10 to help lead the Mustangs to second place in league and the CIF Southern Section Division V playoffs. The Mustangs were the only Newport-Mesa softball program to qualify for CIF.

Further statistics were not available, but Mitani batted No. 3 in the order and Krohnfeldt, a shortstop, was strong on both offense and defense. Feinstein, a second baseman who was a first-team all-league selection for the third straight year, was Costa Mesa’s best defensive player and also a consistent batter.

For the Eagles, Flores finished with a 7-12 record and 2.33 earned-run average. She pitched 129 1/3 innings, striking out 94. She batted .259 with a team-high two home runs and eight RBIs.

Hartwell batted a team-best .431 and had a .554 on-base percentage. She had team highs in runs (14) and hits (22).

Costa Mesa junior catcher Alosina Skipps and sophomore third baseman Kaylyn Jordan made the second team, as did Eagles seniors Nicole Marlborough and Kendra Fisher and junior Kassie Stratton.

Calvary Chapel junior Stephanie Coyne earned league MVP honors after leading her team to the title. The league had Co-Pitchers of the Year, Calvary senior Amanda Gonzales and Godinez junior Allie Rouse.
