Corona del Mar’s John Humphreys earns Sunset League football MVP

Corona del Mar High junior John Humphreys was named the Sunset League football MVP award after he led the Sea Kings to a share of the league title and the CIF Southern Section Division 4 title game.

CdM quarterback Ethan Garbers earned the Offensive Player of the Year award, while Edison senior middle linebacker Luke Hoggard and Los Alamitos senior linebacker Michael-Allen Reddy shared the Defensive Player of the Year honor.

Edison senior running back Kobe Lopez split the Offensive Back of the Year award with Los Alamitos senior wide receiver Zack Wagoner.

The Offensive Lineman of the Year honor went to Edison senior Grant Conaway, the Defensive Lineman of the Year to Los Alamitos junior Zatyvion Miller. Huntington Beach senior John Gosney was the Linebacker of the Year, Los Alamitos senior Bobby Blandino the Defensive Back of the Year, and Edison senior Kieren Spradlin the Kicker of the Year.

Humphreys and Garbers are two of nine Sea Kings on the first team. Edison had nine first-team selections, followed by Huntington Beach’s five, Fountain Valley’s three and Newport Harbor’s two.

Humphreys, a receiver and two-time first-team pick, finished with 103 receptions for 1,783 yards and 28 touchdowns, all CdM single-season records. Humphreys is the Sea Kings’ career leader for catches (176), receiving yards (3,117) and receiving touchdowns (46).

As a safety, Humphreys had 30 tackles, two tackles for loss and one sack.

Garbers completed 284 of 424 passes for 4,135 yards and 55 touchdowns, with only eight interceptions. The completions, yards and touchdowns are CdM single-season records. Garbers also rushed 56 times for 203 yards and six touchdowns.

Garbers and Humphreys helped CdM (11-2-1, 4-0-1 in league) win its seventh consecutive league championship, the preview six were in the Pacific Coast League, and advance to the section final for the fifth time in eight years. The top-seeded Sea Kings were upset by No. 3 Simi Valley Grace Brethren 26-14 at Simi Valley Royal High.

Hoggard amassed 115 tackles to go with 11 tackles for loss, 2½ sacks, three passes defensed, one fumble recovery and one forced fumble. Hoggard is a three-time first-team pick.

Lopez rushed 202 times for 976 yards and five touchdowns.

Conaway helped the Chargers average 144.3 rushing yards per game.

Spradlin converted four of five field-goal attempts and 30 of 33 extra-point kicks.

Hoggard, Lopez, Conaway and Spradlin led the Chargers (5-6, 3-2) to a third-place finish in the league and the Division 2 playoffs, where Edison suffered a 22-15 loss at San Juan Hills.

Gosney, the Linebacker of the Year for the second straight season, finished with 82 tackles, 14½ sacks, 26 tackles for loss, 13 hurries, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery for a touchdown and a blocked punt. Gosney helped the Oilers (6-5, 2-3) take fourth in the league and advance to the Division 6 playoffs, where No. 2-seeded St. Margaret’s handed visiting Huntington Beach a 28-17 first-round loss.

The other CdM players on the first team were senior center Sean Owens, Chandler Fincher, a junior defensive back and returner, junior receiver Bradley Schlom, junior tight end Mark Redman, senior linebacker Luke Fisher, senior defensive lineman Ethan Jajonie and senior defensive lineman Tristen Troutman. The Sea Kings shared first place in the league with Los Alamitos.

Edison’s first-teamers included Isaiah Palmer, a senior defensive back, returner, receiver and punter, senior linebacker Cameron Eden, junior defensive lineman Trent Fletcher, Mike Walters, a junior linebacker and running back, and senior defensive lineman Jovanni Page.

Huntington Beach’s Arick McLawyer, a senior running back and safety, Jeremiah Flanagan, a senior receiver, cornerback and returner, Christian Moore, a junior linebacker and tight end, and junior defensive lineman Michael McCormick made the first team.

Fountain Valley’s first-team members were Brandon Krause, a senior receiver and defensive back, Mathew Fuiava, a senior running back and linebacker, and Kishaun Sykes, a senior receiver, defensive back and returner. The trio led the fifth-place Barons (5-6, 1-4) to the Division 8 playoffs. Third-seeded Santa Ana defeated Fountain Valley 48-26 in the first round at Santa Ana Stadium.

Junior receiver Aiden Goltz and junior linebacker Johnny Brigandi made the first team for last-place Newport Harbor (3-6-1, 0-5), which failed to qualify for the Division 7 playoffs.

Owens, a repeat first-team member, paved the way for CdM to average 296.4 passing yards and 81.2 rushing yards per game.

Fincher had 36 tackles, two interceptions, seven passes defensed and one sack. He averaged 21.3 yards per punt return.

Schlom caught 72 passes for 1,138 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Redman, a two-time first-team pick, had 54 receptions for 598 yards and nine touchdowns.

Fisher made 101 tackles, seven tackles for loss, defended three passes and recovered a fumble.

Jajonie had 39 tackles, seven sacks, 10 tackles for loss and six hurries.

Troutman totaled 44 tackles, five sacks, 12 tackles for loss, two blocked punts, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.

Palmer recorded 48 tackles, six passes defensed and two interceptions. The two-time first-team pick had 15 receptions for 176 yards, and averaged 29 yards per kickoff return and 7.4 yards per punt return.

Eden, a repeat first-teamer, totaled 95 tackles, one sack, seven tackles for loss, one interception, two passes defensed and one blocked field goal.

Fletcher had 83 tackles, 8½ sacks, 15 tackles for loss, one interception and one blocked field goal.

Walters produced 95 tackles, 1½ sacks, two fumble recoveries and one forced fumble. He rushed 49 times for 306 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Page had 56 tackles, nine tackles for loss, 1½ sacks and a fumble recovery.

McLawyer had 145 carries for 817 yards and six touchdowns. The repeat first-teamer made 25 tackles, had two passes defensed and caused a fumble.

Flanagan caught 35 passes for 718 yards and 13 touchdowns. The two-time first-team member had 27 tackles, 11 passes defensed, an interception, a fumble recovery and a forced fumble.

Moore finished with 69 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, 1½ sacks and a fumble recovery. He had 27 receptions for 338 yards and five touchdowns.

McCormick totaled 46 tackles, 6½ sacks, 11 tackles for loss and one fumble recovery.

Krause had 70 catches for 908 yards and seven touchdowns. He intercepted two passes.

Fuiava ran 92 times for 820 yards and nine touchdowns, and caught 12 passes for 118 yards. He had 23 tackles.

Sykes, a two-time first-team selection, finished with 44 catches for 789 yards and seven touchdowns, and 36 carries for 319 yards and three touchdowns. He had 19 tackles and one forced fumble.

Goltz had 66 catches for 883 yards and three touchdowns.
