Southern California Junior Sectionals resume Wednesday
Get ready for several days of extremely competitive tennis.
Qualifying rounds are over at the 115th annual Southern California Junior Sectionals tennis tournament, with main draw play in each age division beginning Wednesday at sites around the Orange County area.
Several local players continue to vie in the prestigious Level 1 tournament. Some made it through the qualifying rounds over the weekend, while some were seeded into the main draw (round of 64).
Rebecca Lynn of Newport Beach is the top seed in the girls’ 14s, and will open her tournament Wednesday against Mina Ewing of Lakewood in a round of 64 match at 10 a.m. at Lakewood Tennis Center. Other locals in the girls’ 14s main draw include Bryn Johnson of Fountain Valley, who will play Sydney Lichtenstein of Los Angeles at the same time and venue.
Also in the girls’ 14s, No. 9-seeded Kaytlin Taylor of Huntington Beach plays Isabella Foshee of Encinitas, also at 10 a.m. at Lakewood. And Lauren Friedman of Newport Beach plays No. 5-seeded Justine Dondonay of Alhambra at the same time and venue.
No. 5-seeded Ella Pachl of Laguna Beach plays Makayla Whalen of Ladera Ranch in another girls’ 14 singles round of 64 match at 3 p.m. at Lakewood. Madeleine Page of Newport Beach and Sarah McCallum of Laguna Beach also will be in action.
Max McKennon of Newport Beach, the No. 2-seeded player in the boys’ 16s, opens his tournament against Jett Cole of Laguna Beach in an all-local round of 64 matchup Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Fountain Valley Tennis Center. Another all-local matchup comes at 1:30 at Fountain Valley, when Corona del Mar High’s Kyle Pham and Diego Fernandez del Valle face off in another boys’ 16s round of 64 match.
No. 9-seeded Michael Vergara of Huntington Beach, Steven Ferry of Newport Beach and Sage Hill School and Emin Torlic of Sage Hill also will all be in action in the boys’ 16s.
Two locals are in the boys’ 18 singles main draw. No. 9-seeded Austin Di Giulio of Newport Beach plays Sahm Irvine of Rancho Palos Verdes at 3 p.m. at Los Caballeros in Fountain Valley, while Austin Johnson of Fountain Valley plays Jed Kronenberg of Beverly Hills at 1:30 p.m.
Bradley Amor of Newport Coast, Lawee Sherif of Huntington Beach, JP Day of Corona del Mar and Will Pellegrini of Newport Beach all have matches in boys’ 14 singles at Fountain Valley High.
In the boys’ 12s, No. 5-seeded Perry Di Giulio of Newport Beach plays Brian Hang of San Marino in a round of 64 match Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. at Costa Mesa Tennis Center. Michael Ishizaki of Laguna Beach plays No. 2-seeded Rohan Murali of San Diego at 3 p.m, while Adam Bain of Newport Coast and Fountain Valley residents Colin Nguyen, Alan Ton and David Duong also all have matches.
The girls’ 18 singles draw is loaded with local competitors, seven in all among the remaining 64. They include No. 5-seeded Julia Lilien of Newport Beach, who plays Martina Asciuto of Irvine in a round of 64 match Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. at Los Cab. No. 9 Sydney Van Alphen of Laguna Beach plays Annika Bassey of Ojai at the same time and venue, while CdM’s Jasie Dunk and Danielle Willson, Katherine Nguyen of Fountain Valley, Shayee Sherif of Huntington Beach and Kelly Keller of Laguna Beach also have round of 64 matches.
Competitors still alive in the girls’ 16 singles include No. 9-seeded Leyden Games of Newport Beach, Shaya Northrup of Newport Beach and Roxy MacKenzie of Newport Coast.
In the girls’ 12 singles, No. 5-seeded Mika Ikemori of Huntington Beach, Katelyn Smith of Laguna Beach, Jessica MacCallum of Laguna Beach, Sienna Brooks of Newport Beach and Audrey Kranson of Newport Beach all have matches.
The tournament continues through the weekend, with semifinal matches on Sunday and championship matches on Monday. There is also a consolation bracket.
