Costa Mesa’s Fisher is Orange Coast League boys’ water polo MVP

Costa Mesa High junior Caedmon Fisher has been named the Orange Coast League boys’ water polo MVP.

It’s the first time in the league’s history that the award has gone to a player not from Laguna Beach. The Breakers, who are headed to the Sunset League next year, won their 12th straight league title this year.

Fisher is joined on the first team by Costa Mesa teammates Augie Cunningham and Tony Shin, as well as Laguna Beach seniors Larsen McCarroll, Peter Weiland and Sebastian Jacobs, and junior Colton Gregory.

Estancia seniors Alex Epperson and Cobi White also were first-team honorees.

Fisher, an attacker and repeat first-team selection, scored a team-best 106 goals for the Mustangs. He added a team-best 74 assists and was second on the team with 55 steals. He helped the Mustangs go 16-14 overall, and place second in league at 3-1.

Costa Mesa beat Vista Murrieta 9-8 in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 3 playoffs. The Mustangs lost at Servite 13-10 in the second round.

Shin, a senior center, was second on the Mustangs with 85 goals, adding 30 assists and 28 steals. Cunningham, a senior center defender and repeat first-team selection, was third on the team in goals (49), second in assists (42), and he had 32 steals.

McCarroll, Weiland, Jacobs and Gregory helped deliver another league championship for Laguna Beach. McCarroll and Jacobs were repeat first-team honorees for the Breakers (19-10, 4-0 in league), who advanced to the Division 2 quarterfinals before losing 6-5 at Redlands East Valley.

Epperson led Estancia with 49 goals, despite spending much of the year playing goalie. White had 47 goals, which ranked third on the team.

The duo helped the Eagles (10-8, 2-2) finish third in league and advance to the Division 6 playoffs for the second straight year. Estancia lost at Lompoc Cabrillo 14-7 in the first round.

Second-team honorees included Laguna Beach senior attackers Riley Bumgardner and Will Clark, Costa Mesa junior attacker Teak Zachary and sophomore goalie Joseph Palmblade, and Estancia senior defender Chris Bauer and freshman driver Logan Richard.
