Six local senior football players make O.C. All-Star Classic

Six local high school football seniors have been selected to the South roster for the Orange County North vs. South All-Star Classic, which will be held at Orange Coast College on Jan. 26 at 7 p.m.

The players making the game were Edison inside linebackers Luke Hoggard and Cameron Eden, Huntington Beach two-way stars Jeremiah Flanagan and Arick McLawyer, Fountain Valley wide receiver Kishaun Sykes, and Ocean View free safety Kermel Anwell. They will start practicing with the South team at Estancia High on Jan. 21.

The O.C. All-Star Classic, sponsored by Costa Mesa United and the Los Angeles Chargers, will have a dinner for the North and South teams at Costa Mesa Country Club on Friday at 6 p.m.

Hoggard and Eden will represent the Chargers after spearheading a defense that held opponents to 19.9 points per game.

Hoggard, who has committed to the University of Pennsylvania, led his team with 115 tackles, adding 2½ sacks, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.

Eden was tied for second on the team with 95 tackles. He also had an interception and blocked a field goal.

Flanagan, a 6-foot-4 wide receiver, had 35 catches for 718 yards and 13 touchdowns. As a cornerback, he added 27 tackles, 11 passes defended, one interception, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.

McLawyer battled through an ankle injury during his senior season, but he still managed to carry the ball 145 times for 817 yards and six touchdowns. He added 25 tackles and a forced fumble as a strong safety.

Sykes’ speed required opposing defenses to account for his big-play potential.

Sykes had 44 catches for 789 yards and seven touchdowns, and he also ran the ball 36 times for 319 yards and three scores.

After helping Ocean View take a share of the Pac 4 League title, its first league title since 1989, Anwell will represent the Seahawks.

Ocean View frequently stacked the box on defense, putting Anwell in a position to make plays on the ball. He led the team with 46 solo tackles and five interceptions.
