Fountain Valley High’s Max Wilner brought home his first state medal on Saturday in the CIF State wrestling championships at Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield.

The Barons’ 160-pound sophomore won by major decision 11-3 over the No. 3 seed in Bakersfield Frontier’s Max Aguirre in the third-place match.

Wilner, who entered as the No. 4 seed in the tournament, said that winning the third-place bout was a statement victory.

“I was glad I wrestled him,” Wilner said of facing Aguirre. “When I went for third or fourth [place], it was just to prove how I should be the No. 3 seed.

“It was just a proving point, kind of, for me. I got the major [decision], so it felt pretty good. It just proved that I should have been the No. 3 seed.”

For the tournament, Wilner went 5-1. He scored two major decisions, a pin, a technical fall and a decision. His loss came against the top seed. Clovis Buchanan’s Matthew Olguin beat Wilner by decision 7-0.
