High School Roundup: Newport Harbor girls’ soccer claims first league title

Sadie Pitchess scored two goals as the Newport Harbor High girls’ soccer team beat Fountain Valley 3-0 on Thursday night at home, clinching the outright Wave League title.

The Sailors (15-2-6, 4-0-1 in league) clinched first after Laguna Beach (2-2-1 in league) lost 6-0 at Marina. It is the first league title in program history, Newport Harbor coach Justin Schroeder said.

“These girls have been driven to do two things this year, win league and CIF,” Schroeder said in a text message. “We check off that first box, on to the next. I’m extremely proud of this community, school and team.”

Emily Johnson had a goal and an assist for Newport Harbor, ranked No. 7 in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 poll, and Kenna Robar drew a penalty kick. Goalkeepers Jessica Gardner and Sami Nowak combined on the shutout.

Newport Harbor concludes league play at home against Marina on Tuesday at 3 p.m., while Fountain Valley (7-10-1, 1-4-1) hosts Laguna Beach at 3 p.m.

Huntington Beach 2, Edison 2: Anna Carleton and Renee Wolfe each scored for the visiting Oilers in Thursday’s Surf League match.

Carleton and Summer Stewart had assists for Huntington Beach (11-6-7, 0-1-4 in league), which sits in third place in the league. The Oilers can finish second with a win at Corona del Mar on Tuesday, as they would own the tiebreaker over the Sea Kings.

Chloe Helenihi and Kelli McKay scored for fourth-place Edison (12-6-3, 0-2-3), while Rachelle Elve had an assist. The Chargers conclude league play with a home match against Los Alamitos on Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Los Alamitos 4, Corona del Mar 0: The Sea Kings were blanked on the road by Surf League champion Los Alamitos on Thursday.

CdM (12-3-4, 2-2-1 in league) is in second place in the league with seven points with a match remaining. The Sea Kings can clinch outright second place by beating Huntington Beach on Tuesday at home at 3 p.m.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Marina 57, Laguna Beach 22: Emily Sakamoto had 13 points, 10 rebounds and five steals to lead the host Vikings, who clinched the outright Wave League title on Thursday.

Katie Nguyen added 11 points, seven steals, five rebounds and four assists for Marina (18-9, 5-0 in league). Kat Robinson contributed 13 points with four rebounds.

Laguna Beach dropped to 17-10 overall and 0-5 in the league.

Huntington Beach 60, Edison 15: Andie Payne had 18 points, eight rebounds and five blocked shots to lead the visiting Oilers in a Surf League game on Thursday.

Meghan McIntyre also had 18 points, and Daniella Benabou brought in nine rebounds.

Huntington Beach (20-6, 4-1) took a one-game lead over Corona del Mar (16-11, 3-2) and Los Alamitos (19-8, 3-2) for first place. The Sea Kings, who lost to Los Alamitos 64-37 on Thursday, will host the Oilers to end the regular season on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Edison fell to 11-14 overall and 0-5 in the league.

Costa Mesa 42, Saddleback 40: The visiting Mustangs were led by Katie Belmontes, who had 15 points in Thursday’s Orange Coast League game.

Samantha Filner added 11 points, and Tarah Harmon and McKayla Ortiz each had six points.

Costa Mesa (13-12, 8-0 in league) can clinch the league title with a win at Santa Ana (15-9, 7-1) on Monday at 7 p.m.
