High school roundup: Edison duo in running for CIF State wrestling titles

Edison High’s Elijah Palacio and Jared Williams advanced to the semifinals of their respective weights on Friday in the CIF State wrestling championships at Bakersfield’s Rabobank Arena.

Palacio, a 132-pounder, earned two victories by decision and one by pin. The senior is ranked fourth in the state by The California Wrestler.

In the quarterfinals, Palacio beat fifth-ranked Marcos Polanco of La Puente Bishop Amat by a 5-1 decision.

Williams, a 152-pounder, registered a pin, a technical fall and a decision. He improved upon his state ranking due to his performance at the CIF Southern Section Masters, jumping from No. 8 to No. 6.

Both Chargers standouts will face rematches of their Masters championship bouts in the state semifinals.

Palacio will square off with Corona Santiago sophomore Jesse Vasquez, the top-ranked wrestler at 132 pounds. Vasquez won last week’s duel 9-4.

Williams gets another shot at Trabuco Hills’ second-ranked junior Trey Munoz after he was bested in a 6-3 decision last Saturday at Temecula Valley High.

Fountain Valley freshman Max Wilner remains alive for a medal. The Barons’ 145-pounder advanced to Saturday’s action with a 5-0 decision over Perris Citrus Hill’s Carlos Mejia in consolation.

Wilner was knocked out of the championship bracket in his second-round match by sixth-ranked Izzak Olejnik, a senior from Bakersfield. The match was scored a 3-2 decision.

On Saturday, Wilner will have to defeat Salinas junior Alfredo Mendoza to stay in medal contention. Mendoza is the second seed from the Central Coast Section.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Corona del Mar 21, Palisades 1: Senior captain Chloe Harbilas had four goals and three steals for the No. 2-seeded Sea Kings in a CIF Southern California Regional Division II first-round game Friday night at home.

CdM (23-7) will host No. 3 Los Alamitos in the semifinals Saturday at 10:10 a.m. at CdM. The final is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.

Megan Peterson had three goals and four steals for CdM. Senior Riley Sidebotham and junior Chloe Smith also scored three goals for the Sea Kings, who got two goals each from Carter Britt, Sophie Wallace and Kira Hoffman.

CdM goalie Erin Tharp made four first-half saves and Maya Avital made two second-half saves.

BOYS’ SWIMMING

Costa Mesa 118, La Quinta 52: Augie Cunningham, Aidan Blair and Tony Shin were all double-event winners for the host Mustangs in Friday’s nonleague meet.

Cunningham won the 200-yard individual medley in 2 minutes 11.93 seconds, and the 500 free in 5:13.39. Blair captured the 100 butterfly in 52.84 seconds and the 100 breaststroke in 1:04.03, while Shin won the 50 free (24.40) and 100 free (54.01) for the Mustangs.

Caedmon Fisher won the 100 backstroke in 1:04.17 for Costa Mesa, which also won all three relays.

GIRLS’ SWIMMING

La Quinta 95, Costa Mesa 75: Sey Currie won the 50-yard and 100 freestyle events for the Mustangs in Friday’s nonleague meet at home.

Currie touched in 27.07 seconds in the 50 free, and 1 minute 0.45 seconds in the 100 free. She also anchored the winning 200 medley relay team, which also featured Liz Vaidhayakul, Kaylie Tickenoff and Lainey Dean and finished in 2:13.88.

Hannah Reese, Ta’iuta Uiagalelei, Dean and Harper Yeager won the 200 free relay in 2:00.34, while Tickenoff captured the 500 free in 6:16.09.
