High School Roundup: Niemand’s late basket leads to Edison win
Senior center Ashley Niemand scored 14 points with seven rebounds, as Edison High’s girls’ basketball team defeated Sunny Hills 51-49 in the Mayfair Winter Classic on Saturday.
Niemand grabbed an offensive rebound and made a layup with less than 30 seconds remaining to put Edison ahead. The Chargers (6-5) got the stop they needed at the other end.
Senior guard Hope Nguyen had 14 points, six rebounds, and five assists. Senior power forward Finley Garnett added 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Ventura St. Bonaventure 56, Edison 46: Senior shooting guard Gabby Samiy had a team-high 16 points, but the Chargers (5-5) took the loss in the Mayfair Winter Classic at Savanna High on Friday.

Huntington Beach 42, Houston Memorial 27: Freshman point guard Alyssa Real had 21 points to lead the Oilers (6-4) over the Mustangs (8-12) on Friday in the Nike Tournament of Champions in Phoenix, Ariz.
Real connected on seven of 11 attempts from beyond the three-point line.
Junior forward Bella Serrano had eight points, and sophomore guard Marisa Tanga added five points.
The Oilers went 2-2 in the tournament, placing seventh in their bracket.
WRESTLING
Newport Harbor High’s wrestling team competed in the Ed Springs Tournament at Brea Olinda High, with three Sailors placing on Saturday.
Junior Austin Osumi earned the high-water mark for Newport Harbor, taking third at 195 pounds. He went 4-1 in the tournament, recording two pins, a technical fall, and one decision.
Sophomore JJ Perez claimed seventh at 220, and junior Dakota Mungall was eighth at 152.
Perez was 3-2 with two pins. Mungall was 3-3 with three pins.
