High School Roundup: Alvarez’s double-double leads Newport Harbor over Costa Mesa
Junior point guard Lexi Alvarez had a game-high 22 points with 10 assists and seven steals as Newport Harbor High defeated host Costa Mesa 50-34 in a nonleague girls’ basketball game on Tuesday night.
The Sailors (4-5) defeated the Mustangs (1-4) for the second time in five days after beating Costa Mesa in the Hawk Holiday Classic at Ocean View High last Friday.
Newport Harbor’s Willa Rath added 12 points and six rebounds, and Chloe Swanson scored eight points while pulling down 11 rebounds.
Katie Belmontes paced the Mustangs with 14 points. Tarah Harmon and Samantha Filner each had seven points.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL
Corona del Mar 86, Saddleback 29: Sophomore guard John Humphreys finished with 26 points in the Sea Kings’ opening game of the Charlie Wilkins Memorial Tournament at Westminster High on Tuesday.
Jake Griffin added 10 points for CdM (3-1), which resumes pool-play action against Long Beach Jordan at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
Ocean View 84, Western 24: Senior center Mehkel Harvey’s 14 points led the Seahawks in their first pool-play game of the Lodinez Tournament on Tuesday.
Ocean View’s Qui Greiner contributed 12 points, and Paul Head had nine points and six assists.
The Seahawks (5-2) face Anaheim in the tournament at Godinez High on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
El Toro 73, Edison 67: Senior forward Spencer Serven finished with a game-high 25 points in the Chargers’ first game in the SoCal Elite Gary Raya Classic at Beckman High on Tuesday.
David Atencio added 11 points for Edison (2-3).
The Chargers next play Yorba Linda in the tournament on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
Northwood 66, Huntington Beach 47: Senior guard Cade Ortiz had 15 points for the Oilers in Tuesday’s opening game of the SoCal Elite Gary Raya Classic at Tustin High.

Pacifica Christian Orange County 3, Calvary Chapel Downey 0: Freshman Casie Carlson had a goal and two assists for visiting Pacifica Christian Orange County in a nonleague game Tuesday.
Freshman Buze Harrison and junior Sadie Hill also scored for Pacifica Christian (5-0). Freshman Ava Dillion added an assist, and freshman goalie Jo Snider made four saves.
Pacifica Christian plays at Capistrano Valley Christian on Thursday at 2:30 p.m.
Corona Santiago 4, Corona del Mar 3: Ashley Maloney had a goal and an assist for the Sea Kings in Tuesday’s Sunny Hills Tournament pool-play game at CdM.
Alyssa McKenzie and Megan Chelf also scored for CdM (3-2-1), and Ava McKenzie had two assists. Giovanna Broderick made eight saves.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO
Estancia 20, Paramount 4: Cassie Corrigan and Sydni White each scored seven goals for the host Eagles in Tuesday’s nonleague game.
Gidget Brestel and Annie Mitchell each scored twice for the Eagles (2-3), while Mackenzie McIntyre and Bella Dunham added single goals. Mitchell and Zora McPhail both made four goalie saves.
Estancia plays host to Westminster on Thursday at 3 p.m.
Ocean View 8, Marina 7: Leyna Tran, Kiara Abascal and Victoria Warren all scored for the host Seahawks in Tuesday’s nonleague game.
The Seahawks (2-3) play at Villa Park on Dec. 19, while Marina plays at Long Beach Millikan on Thursday.
