High School Roundup: Sailors clinch at least share of league title

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Newport Harbor def. Edison

Dayne Chalmers produced 16 kills in the Sailors’ 25-21, 29-27, 25-22 win to clinch at least a share of the Sunset League title at home on Tuesday.

Newport Harbor, which shared the league crown last season, improved to 8-0 in league.

Ryan Schroeder had six digs for the Sailors (23-3 overall), ranked No. 4 in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 poll.

Newport Harbor can win the league outright with a win at home against Fountain Valley on Friday at 5:30 p.m.

Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions

SANTA BARBARA — Patrick Paragas amassed 33 kills, to go with two kills, two service aces and three digs, lifting the Sea Kings to a 25-21, 25-22, 25-13 sweep of Westlake in the finals at Santa Barbara High on Saturday night.

Jake Meyer had nine kills, and Clay Dickinson and Kevin Kobrine added eight kills for CdM (24-2), ranked No. 3 in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 poll. The Sea Kings also swept University, 25-16, 26-18, 25-20, on Tuesday to remain undefeated (8-0) in the Pacific Coast League, and clinched at least a share of the league title. Tyler Flood led the Sea Kings with 10 kills

In the TOC semifinals, CdM swept Mountain View St. Francis, 25-22, 25-12, 25-21.

Meyer had 15 kills against St. Francis, while Clay Dickinson added nine kills and Paragas totaled 36 assists and two aces.

The Sea Kings play a nonleague match at No. 2 Los Angeles Loyola on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.

Whitney def. Sage Hill

CERRITOS — Josh Lee finished with 18 kills for the Lightning in an Academy League match host Whitney won, 16-25, 25-23, 27-25, 22-25, 15-10, on Monday.

Logan Senn had 13 kills for Sage Hill.

BASEBALL

Estancia 12, Saddleback 0

SANTA ANA — Colin Gardner went two for five with a grand slam and five runs batted in during an Orange Coast League game on the road on Tuesday.

The Eagles (14-8, 7-2 in league) have won six straight games and 12 out of their last 15.

Joe Stukkie was three for four with two RBIs for Estancia.

Nic Mazur and Tyler Ross each had two hits.

Estancia plays host to Saddleback on Thursday at 3:15 p.m.

Sage Hill 6, Oxford Academy 0

Brett Super struck out six and allowed two hits in six innings, keeping the host Lightning undefeated in the Academy League on Tuesday.

Conner Hatz had two hits and four runs batted in for Sage Hill (18-2-2, 7-0 in league).

Edward Pelc threw one inning, striking out two.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

Corona del Mar 13, Marina 3

Matt Keasey recorded two goals and a ground ball for the Sea Kings in a game at home on Saturday.

Grant Spruce added a goal and three ground balls for CdM (13-2), while Sam Haase won 10 of 12 faceoffs.

The Sea Kings play at Tesoro on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Newport Harbor 13, Fountain Valley 5

Max McKennon swept at No. 1 singles to remain undefeated this season in the Sunset League match on Tuesday at Newport Harbor.

David Lee swept at No. 2 singles, Sam Leaman and Mark Schaefer swept at No. 1 doubles, as did Andy Myers and David Sharp at No. 2 doubles for the Sailors (15-4, 7-2 in league).

Corona del Mar 12, Northwood 6

Matt Paulsen and John Hart swept in doubles for the Sea Kings in Tuesday’s Pacific Coast League match.

Jacob Cooper and Ryan Wessler also swept for CdM (6-3 in league). Grant Brown and Luke Muradliyan won two doubles sets.

CdM also beat Woodbridge, 16-2, on Monday. Diego Fernandez del Valle and Kyle Pham swept in singles, as did Paulsen and Hart in doubles.

Pham will compete in the CIF Singles division at the Ojai tournament beginning Thursday, with Fernandez del Valle and Paulsen in the CIF Doubles division.

BOYS’ GOLF

Newport Harbor 183, Fountain Valley 201

The Sailors’ Campbell Norris tied a school record for the lowest nine-hole score with a three-under-par 32 to earn medalist honors at Costa Mesa Country Club’s Mesa Linda course on Tuesday.

Ted Terry, Ethan Barnes and Noah Mayne each shot 37 and Jack Christensen 40 for Newport Harbor (10-3, 8-2 in league).

The Sailors compete in Sunset League finals starting Wednesday at Skylinks Golf Course.

Northwood 192, Corona del Mar 193

Clay Seeber shot one-under-par 34, the low for the Sea Kings in the Pacific Coast League match on Tuesday at Newport Beach Country Club.

Guy Clauss (37), Lawrence Shih (40), TJ Jenkins (41) and Zach Glabman (41) also scored for CdM (11-5, 6-3 in league).

SOFTBALL

Sunset League

Marina 6, Newport Harbor 1: The Vikings moved to 9-9 overall, 4-1 in league. Marina has yet to face Los Alamitos, which moved to 5-0 in league with its second win over Huntington Beach (ranked No. 8 in CIF-SS Division 1) on Tuesday.

Orange Coast League

Estancia 12, Saddleback 0 (5 innings): The Eagles (10-8, 2-2) ambushed the Roadrunners (0-19, 0-4) with 11 runs in the first two innings.

Emily Kubisty, Kalena Shepherd, and Mackenzie McIntyre had two hits and two RBI apiece.

Brittany Walker recorded the shutout. She allowed two hits and struck out five.

Garden Grove League

Los Amigos 14, Bolsa Grande 9: The Lobos (10-12, 3-4) scored at least two runs in every inning except the second to hold off the Matadors (4-10-1, 1-6).

Academy League

Downey Calvary Chapel 13, Brethren Christian 0: The Warriors (4-10, 0-5) are winless in five league games.

Sunset League

Fountain Valley 5, Edison 3: The Barons (13-13, 2-4) turned the tables on the Chargers (11-7, 2-4) after Edison won on a walk-off home run in the first meeting.

These two bitter rivals will split the “Battle for the Bell” this year.

Pacific Coast League

Northwood 5, Corona del Mar 1: Mallory McCrane had a double and a triple, but the Sea Kings (10-10, 2-3) could not hold onto a one-run lead late.

McCrane drove in Lauren Oberreiter in the top of the fifth.

The Timberwolves (6-12, 1-3) came back with four runs in the bottom half of the inning, and they added another in the sixth.

Audrey Tumbarello threw five innings in the contest. The freshman had dealt with a back injury earlier this season, and Sea Kings coach Jordann Wakabayashi had planned not to push the young right-hander beyond three innings for the remainder of the season.

Tumbarello allowed four hits, walked three, and struck out five in the outing.
