Ocean View’s Helen Reynolds earns Golden West League MVP in girls’ volleyball
Ocean View High senior middle blocker Helen Reynolds was named the Golden West League MVP for leading the girls’ volleyball team to an undefeated league title.
Reynolds led the Seahawks (23-5, 10-0 in league) in kills with 166 on .278 hitting. She was second on the team in total blocks with 33 and service aces with 38. She had a season-high 16 kills against Godinez on Sept. 16.
Senior outside hitter Jillian Pratt, senior libero Kelli Greiner and junior setter Alyson Nguyen also received first-team honors for the Seahawks. They, along with Reynolds, helped Ocean View go on a 20-match winning streak this season. The run ended in the CIF Southern Section Division 7 semifinals at Temecula Linfield Christian, which beat the Seahawks 25-15, 25-20, 25-18.
Ocean View’s season ended in a five-set loss to visiting Chatsworth in the first round of the CIF State Southern California Regional Division IV tournament.
Pratt had 109 kills and 25 aces. Greiner turned in 274 service receptions, 257 digs and 29 aces. Nguyen finished with 456 assists to go with 141 digs and 41 aces.
Senior opposite Cambria Adams and sophomore middle blocker Wendie Smith were nominated to the second team.
