High School Girls’ Basketball Roundup: Niemand’s 26 points leads Edison in opener
Ashley Niemand had 26 points to lead the Edison High girls’ basketball team to a 55-45 win over Victorville Victor Valley in its opening game of the Brea Olinda Ladycat Classic on Tuesday.
Hope Nguyen added 11 points in Edison’s season opener, and forward Finley Garnett had eight points.
The tournament continues tomorrow, with Edison facing Hesperia at 6 p.m. at Brea Olinda High.
Tustin 62, Newport Harbor 32
Caylee Hermanson scored 25 points with two three-pointers to lift the Tillers over the Sailors in a season opener for both teams in the CdM Tip-off Tournament on Tuesday.
Lexi Alvarez had 16 points and six rebounds, but Tustin’s scoring proved too much to match. Sailors coach Jillian Blackledge said the junior did not start because she missed practice.
Freshman forward Willa Rath added six points, five rebounds and one block for the Sailors.
Newport Harbor’s Ashleigh McPhie and Taylor Howard drew the start in the frontcourt, with each pulling down five rebounds.
Tesoro 40, Huntington Beach 31
Junior small forward Bella Serrano led the Oilers with nine points and eight rebounds in defeat in the South Coast Tournament at University High on Tuesday night.
Freshman Meghan McIntyre had eight points, and freshman Alyssa Real added five points.
Huntington Beach (0-1) travels to Woodbridge for its next game in the tournament on Wednesday.
Sage Hill 48, El Modena 39
Freshman Emily Elliott finished with 10 points, 11 rebounds, eight blocks, six steals and two assists in her Lightning debut during the CdM Tip-Off Tournament on Tuesday.
Sage Hill (1-0) resumes tournament play against Palos Verdes on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
