Key Mustangs: Sr. QB Ben Swanson (21 of 41 passing for 250 yards and one TD, one INT); Sr. RB/DE Angel Valle (14 carries for 53 yards); Sr. RB/MLB Chris Romero (12 carries for 64 yards).
Key Saxons: Jr. RB/CB Jacob “Jiggy” Mendoza (16 carries for 180 yards, two TDs); Jr. QB Matt Blackney (seven of 14 passing for 97 yards, one TD, one INT; one rushing TD); Jr. WR/CB Drew Perkins (two catches for 35 yards, one TD).
Breakdown: Costa Mesa (1-1) is coming off a 28-7 loss to Garden Grove Santiago, while Loara (1-0) beat Estancia, 39-19, in its season opener last week at Western … The Mustangs play their third straight home game to start the season … Loara’s win over Estancia snapped an eight-game losing streak dating to 2016 and was just the Saxons’ second victory in the last four years … Mendoza will look to burn his second straight Costa Mesa school after scoring three total touchdowns against Estancia, two on carries of 15 and 90 yards and one on a kickoff return of 80 yards … After Friday’s game, Costa Mesa isn’t home again until the Orange Coast League opener against Calvary Chapel on Oct. 6.
