Local trio makes first-team All-Orange Coast League

Estancia High senior shooting guard Josh Mendoza earned first-team All-Orange Coast League honors in boys’ basketball, as did Costa Mesa’s senior backcourt of Sean Comer and Kyle Hefner.

Mendoza lifted the at-large Eagles to a 55-49 upset at No. 11-seeded Indio in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 3A playoffs. He finished with 29 points and five three-pointers, helping Estancia reach the second round for the second time in three seasons, both times under Coach Agustin Heredia.

For the season, Mendoza averaged an area-best 19.7 points per game, ranking him No. 6 in Orange County. He knocked down 100 three-pointers, the second-best total in the county.

Estancia (10-18, 4-6) finished fourth in league.

Comer and Hefner led the Mustangs to 19 overall victories, tying the program’s single-season record, a runner-up finish in league, and the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 4AA playoffs.

Comer averaged 14 points per game.

Hefner, a two-time first-team selection, averaged 14 points per game.

In Coach Mike Molina’s first season in charge, the Mustangs went 7-3 in league and won the Battle for the Bell rivalry against Estancia for the third straight season.

Costa Mesa senior guard Daniel Azurin made the second team, along with Estancia senior point guard Martin Harry.

The Orange Coast League named Laguna Beach’s Noah Blanton as its MVP.
