Three locals make podium at CIF State Track Championships

CLOVIS — No matter how they might have fared on Saturday, perspective gave local athletes all that they needed to come away encouraged.

The finals of the CIF State Track and Field Championships came and went without the area grabbing one of the individual titles, and yet there was still much to be thankful for on a warm night at Clovis Buchanan High.

Marina’s Kyle Tsu, Newport Harbor’s Ryan Fegan, and Costa Mesa’s Felicia Crenshaw walked away with podium finishes in their events.

Tsu was not thrilled with the outcome, a fourth-place finish in the shot put at 60 feet, 3 1/4 inches. He had come into the meet with the area’s highest hopes of bringing home the first-place crown as the state’s No. 3 athlete (PR of 63-10) in the event.

“I’m not overjoyed that I’m leaving with a 60, but at the same time, I’m happy that I ended on the podium. Not a lot of people make it up here.”

The win went to Clovis’ Jonah Wilson, who set a new personal best with a mark of 66 feet, 2 3/4 inches.

“Big congratulations to Jonah,” Tsu said. “He obviously brought his A-game today.”

Marina throws coach Mike Giron said that Tsu now has a 30-day birthday to celebrate, a lasting tradition in Vietnam.

“In Vietnam, kids didn’t make it 30 days when they were born because of the situation,” Giron said. “When kids made it 30 days in the good old days, they would celebrate their 30-day birthday.”

Tsu might prefer a 30-day break, as the end of the season will allow him to properly rest his right wrist (tendinosis), which he competed with all year.

Fellow Vikings senior Jake Arnold placed ninth at 55 feet, 3/4 inches. He was able to survive the mid-event cut in the throws, which granted three additional attempts to athletes that were in the top nine after their first three attempts.

In order to reach the podium, athletes had to place in the top six of their event. Crenshaw came into the day hoping for a new personal record and a top-five finish.

With a new lifetime best of 156 feet, 8 inches and a fifth-place showing, she accomplished her goals. Crenshaw remains the Mustangs’ all-time record-holder in the event.

Discus is the only event that does not get contested before the sizable crowd, and what made the biggest impression on Crenshaw was when she stepped onto the podium in the middle of the stadium.

“It was cool,” Crenshaw said. “It was a little nerve-wracking, but it was fun that people cheered for us. Just to know that people care about our event and they were amazed by what we were throwing was nice.

“It’s exciting, a great experience, and I’m truly blessed. I’m happy to make it up there with all those amazing girls. It drives me to be up there again next year.”

A midseason right hamstring injury left Fegan at less than full strength for the second half of the season. He was not sure how his season would finish, especially knowing that he would have to jump on back-to-back days.

Newport Harbor’s senior pole vaulter wound up placing fourth at 15 feet, 10 inches.

“These last couple of weeks have been brutal for injuries because you just have to vault every weekend,” Fegan said. “I kind of felt it on Friday, too. I’m happy with where it is, but it could have been better.

“You can’t be mad. That’s a really good opportunity to be able to finish in the top six.”

Marina’s Michael Magula took home eighth in boys’ pole vault at 15 feet, 4 inches.
