High School Boys’ Basketball Roundup: Newport Harbor opens season with win
Junior forward Dayne Chalmers finished with 15 points, helping the Newport Harbor High boys’ basketball team edge host Godinez 50-46 in a pool-play game in the Grizzly Invitational on Monday.
Brad Siegel had 13 points and six rebounds for the Sailors, while Elijah Firey added 11 points.
Newport Harbor plays Bolsa Grande in a pool-play game at Godinez on Tuesday at 4:45 p.m.
Laguna Beach 91, Katella 24
Senior guard Blake Burzell led the Breakers with 28 points in their opening pool-play game in the Grizzly Invitational at Godinez High on Monday.
Charlie Rounaghi and Grady Morgan contributed 18 points apiece for Laguna Beach, which led 55-11 at halftime.
The Breakers (1-0) face El Dorado in pool-play action at Godinez on Wednesday at 7:45 p.m.
Northwood 88, Costa Mesa 63
Junior guard Tre Villalpando produced 19 points for the Mustangs in their pool-play game in the Grizzly Invitational at Loara High on Monday.
Costa Mesa’s Nico Dasca had 18 points and Osman Hefner chipped in 14.
The Mustangs (0-2) play Savanna in a pool-play game at Loara on Wednesday at 3:15 p.m.
Ocean View 91, Lakewood 56
Senior guard Paul Head finished with 19 points, seven assists and five rebounds for the host Seahawks in their opening game of the Jim Harris Classic on Monday.
Ocean View’s Seth Mishler had 18 points.
The Seahawks (2-0) face ThunderRidge, from Highlands Ranch, Colo., in the tournament on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
Marina 62, Troy 57
Junior forward Jakob Alamudun recorded 29 points and 22 rebounds in the Vikings’ first game in the Jim Harris Classic at Ocean View High on Monday.
Marina (2-0) plays JSerra at Ocean View on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
Estancia 58, Santa Ana 46
Senior guard Cameron Jones finished with 21 points in the Eagles’ first-round game in the Los Amigos Tournament on Monday.
Estancia’s Alex Hendricks had 13 points and Jackson Winters added 11.
The Eagles (4-1) resume tournament play against Sage Hill at Pacifica High on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
Sage Hill 60, Rancho Alamitos 50
The Lightning improved to 1-1 overall with a pool-play win in the Los Amigos Tournament on Monday.
