DELRAY BEACH, Fla. — Sophomore Juan Arellano converted an assist from junior Jesus Fregoso in the 105th minute on Monday to propel the Lions into Wednesday’s quarterfinals of the NAIA Tournament.
Goalkeeper Brandon Gomez scored on a 45-yard free kick to pull Vanguard (14-6-2) even in the 84th minute.
Bellevue (15-3-2) opened the scoring in the 21st minute.
Unseeded Vanguard, which will meet Northwestern of Ohio (17-4-1) in a quarterfinal on Wednesday at 8 a.m. Pacific time, extended its unbeaten streak to nine games. Coach Randy Dodge’s Lions lost in the round of 16 in their only other NAIA Tournament appearance in 2010.
Gomez made four saves for the winners.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The No. 11-seeded Friars scored on a free kick in the 77th minute of the round of 16 match in the NCAA Tournament on Sunday.
Markus Naglestad drove a free kick inside the left post to end the season for the Anteaters (16-6-3), who made their third appearance in the Sweet 16.
Providence had 17 of the game’s 25 shots as UCI had only two shots on goal, both by senior defender Bryan Breslin.
UCI’s Michael Breslin, a junior goalkeeper, made four saves as Providence (15-4-2) advanced to the quarterfinals.
“We had our sights set on moving on, getting to the quarterfinals,” UCI Coach Chris Volk said. “Everything has got to come together in these later rounds. It’s the smallest differences that allow teams to advance.”
UCI’s 16 wins matched the 2011 squad for most in program history and the ‘Eaters’ two NCAA Tournament wins were a first.

Texas at Brownsville def. Vanguard
SIOUX CITY, Iowa — Senior Jessica Neves had 12 kills and senior Kelly Heenan had 15 digs for the Lions in the first of three pool-play matches at the NAIA Tournament on Tuesday.
No. 5-ranked Texas at Brownsville, the reigning national champion, swept, 27-25,25-17, 25-19, to improve to 30-4.
No. 21-ranked Vanguard, which received eight kills from Charlotte Heerlyn, who posted a .667 hitting percentage, fell to 23-12.
The Lions meet No. 8-ranked Columbia of Missouri (33-6) in the second pool-play contest on Wednesday.

UC Irvine def. Cal State Northridge
Junior outside hitter Marisa Bubica had 24 kills and hit .455 to lead the host Anteaters to a 28-26, 16-25, 25-23, 27-25 Big West Conference victory in their season finale on Saturday.
Allison Lee had 17 kills, while Cassidy Pickrell added 16 for UCI (19-12, 9-7 in conference).
Shelley Anderson had 57 assists and Molly Yoder topped four Anteaters who had double-figure digs with 13.
The Matadors fell to 19-9, 10-6.

EL CAJON — The Pirates were swept, 25-22, 25-11, 25-22, and were eliminated in the second round of the Southern California Regional playoffs.
The No. 10-seeded Pirates (15-7) were led by Danielle Boyette who had 21 assists.
The No. 2-seeded Griffins improved to 27-0.
