Rocky Mountain 95, Vanguard 82

LAS VEGAS, Nev. — The No. 1-ranked and defending NAIA champion Lions shot a dismal 30.1% from the field in the second game of the Las Vegas Classic on Saturday at Liberty High.

Senior All-American Chris Gorman made two of 17 field-goal attempts, including one of nine from three-point range, as Vanguard (4-1) connected on just six of 32 from beyond the arc (18.8%).

Zach Allmon had 16 points and seven rebounds, while DeAngelo Jones had 15 points for the Lions.

Gorman, who had four assists and four steals had 13 points, as did Selle Hann, while Myles Smith had 10 points, seven rebounds, three steals and three assists off the bench.

No. 22-ranked Rocky Mountain is 4-1.

On Friday in Las Vegas, Gorman had 13 points and four assists to pace a 74-62 win over No. 15-ranked Westminster of Utah.

Jones had 12 points and six rebounds, while Keith Mason (nine points and eight rebounds) and Allmon (eight points and six boards) were also productive.

Gorman was a combined four for 27 from the field (14.8%) and two for 13 from threedom (15.4%) in the two games.

Vanguard returns to action at No. 3-ranked Cal State San Marcos on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Vanguard 85, La Sierra 56

Juniors Samantha Doucette and Riley Holsinger scored 30 and 29, respectively, to lead the host Lions in the nonconference game Monday.

Holsinger added 15 rebounds and six steals, both team highs, and was 10 for 15 from the field to help the No. 3-ranked Lions improve to 2-0.

Jaime Goff had 13 rebounds and five points, while Lauren Martin chipped in six assists for Vanguard, which had only five of the game’s 24 turnovers.

Vanguard holds its alumni game Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. and then is idle until it opens Golden State Athletic Conference play on Dec. 2 at home against No. 13-ranked Westmont.

La Sierra is 0-4.

UC Irvine 54, Grand Canyon 53

PHOENIX — Sophomore Mokun Fajemisin made two free throws with six seconds left to seal the nonconference win on Sunday.

Fajemisin, a 6-foot forward, had 15 of her career-high 21 points in the second half to help UCI (1-1) record its first win of the season. Fajemisin had a team-best seven rebounds, made seven of 15 field-goal attempts and sank all seven of her free throws.

Junior Raelyn Cheung-Sutton had nine points, a career-high five rebounds and three assists for the Anteaters.

UCI lost the rebounding battle, 49-35, and had 21 turnovers, three more than the hosts. But UCI held Grand Canyon (0-1) to 26.9% shooting from the field, including only 21.9% from three-point range.

Mt. San Jacinto Tournament

SAN JACINTO — Orange Coast College lost two games, the second an 82-80 overtime setback against Victor Valley on Saturday, to open its season.

Nicole Beaudoin had 23 points, while Jasmin Matar and Kelcie Mayott added 18 apiece.

Mater had 11 rebounds.

In a 60-53 loss to Barstow on Thursday, Matar had 31 points and 10 rebounds.

Mayott had nine points and seven rebounds, while Deanna Fink had a team-best 11 rebounds.

OCC visit Palomar for a two-game tournament that begins Friday at 5 p.m. against Los Angeles Valley.

MEN’S WATER POLO

Orange Coast 20, Los Angeles Valley 18

GLENDORA — The Pirates overcame an 11-6 halftime deficit behind eight goals and one assist from Jake Davis in the third-place game of the Southern California Regional Championships on Saturday at Citrus College.

OCC was defeated by eventual champion Golden West, 18-6, in the semifinals, after posting a 16-14 quarterfinal triumph against Citrus.

Trent Hayes had four goals and one assist against L.A. Valley, while Scott Brush added three goals and one assist.

Massimo Navarretta had 10 saves, while Josh Hayashi and Jake Ousten each had two goals in the third-place game.

OCC finished the season 18-12.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Vanguard def. Wiilliam Jessup

Senior libero Kelly Heenan had 23 digs to give her 1,602 for her career in the host Lions’ 25-13, 25-7, 25-16 Golden State Athletic Conference sweep on Saturday.

The win closed the regular season for the No. 21-ranked Lions (22-11, 11-5 in conference). The 11 conference wins are a school record and helped the third-place Lions earn an at-large berth in the NAIA Tournament.

Vanguard will play host to Concordia of Oregon (19-9) on Saturday at 7 p.m.

Rachael Barker had 10 kills and Lauren Hays had 16 assists for the winners.

William Jessup is 1-16, 1-15.
