High School Roundup: CdM sweeps in first round

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Corona del Mar 15, El Dorado 3

The Sea Kings swept in doubles in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 first-round playoff match Wednesday at Corona del Mar High.

Riley Gerdau and Siena Sharf won, 6-0, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 1 doubles for No. 4-seeded CdM (16-5). Taylor Fogarty and Camellia Edalat won, 6-1, 6-1, 6-1, while Paige Kenerson combined with Erica Chen and Emily Fujita to sweep.

Shelby Anderson, Elena Fish and Jasie Dunk all won two sets in singles.

CdM lost the pre-coin flip and will play at Back Bay rival Newport Harbor in the second round Friday at 2 p.m. It is the first time the two programs have met in the playoffs since 1997, when current Newport Harbor Coach Kristen Case was a sophomore for the Sailors. CdM won that Division 1 semifinal match, 12-6.

Newport Harbor 12, Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks 6

Anna Burke and Kendall Cosenza swept, 6-2, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 1 doubles in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 first-round playoff match Wednesday at Newport Harbor High.

Courtney Howarth and Elle Zielinski swept, 6-1, 6-2, 6-1, for the Sailors (17-6). Jenn Kingsley and Nicole Knickerbocker each won twice in singles.

Newport Harbor won the pre-coin flip and will play host to No. 4-seeded rival Corona del Mar in the second round Friday at 2 p.m.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Newport Harbor 12, Fountain Valley 6

Gavin Kunkle scored four goals for the Sailors in their Sunset League finale Wednesday at Newport Harbor High.

Newport Harbor’s win over Fountain Valley, combined with Edison’s 4-3 win over Los Alamitos later Wednesday, means the Sailors, Barons and Chargers all finished tied for second in league behind champion Huntington Beach.

Two tiebreaker games will be played Thursday at Newport Harbor. Edison won the coin flip and will play Los Alamitos in the second-place match at 3 p.m., with the Sailors to play the loser of that game for third place at 5 p.m. With a sub-.500 overall record, the Sailors must win that game to secure a CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoff berth.

Hannes Daube scored three for the Sailors (8-16, 3-2 in league) against Fountain Valley, and Ryan Braun scored twice. Nick Rimlinger, Clay Davison and Charlie Padden added a goal each.

Nick Wood made nine saves and Joe Ferraro had six for the Sailors.

Corona del Mar 17, Northwood 9

Brendan Hack had four goals for the Sea Kings, who finished off an undefeated Pacific Coast League campaign Tuesday at home.

Ashton Jajonie and Patrick Ong each scored three times for CdM (22-4, 10-0 in league). Garrett Spruth and Connor Turnbow-Lindenstadt each had two goals, and Nigel Bress and Tristan Ospina combined for 11 saves.

CdM, ranked No. 4 in CIF Southern Section Division 1, plays host to No. 2 Mater Dei at 5 p.m. Friday in the regular-season finale.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Sage Hill def Laguna Beach

Senior outside hitter Halland McKenna finished with 14 kills, eight digs, three blocks and three service aces in a regular-season finale the Lightning won, 25-23, 25-15, 25-15, at home on Wednesday.

Sage Hill (18-3), ranked No. 1 in the CIF Southern Section Division 3AA poll, is expected to earn the No. 1 seed in its division when the playoff pairings are released on Friday. Sage Hill has appeared in three straight section finals.

Kekai Whitford recorded 10 kills and five aces for the Lightning, while Maddy Abbott contributed 34 assists, three kills and three aces.

Sophia Mossman had six kills and one block for Sage Hill, which defeated Laguna Beach, ranked No. 3 in Division 2AA, for the second straight year.
