High School Roundup: CdM’s Willson advances to PCL semifinals

Pacific Coast League tournament
IRVINE — Corona del Mar High’s No. 1 doubles team and No. 3 doubles team, as well as No. 1 singles player Danielle Willson, won twice Wednesday at Beckman High to advance to the semifinals.
Willson, the No. 6 seed, defeated Jin Ki of Beckman, 8-0, in the first round before topping Lorna Morris of Woodbridge, 6-0, 6-1, in the quarterfinals. She’ll play No. 2-seeded Alyssa Rudin of University in a semifinal at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Beckman.
CdM’s Riley Gerdau and Siena Sharf, the top seeds, will play the No. 4-seeded team from University in a doubles semifinal. CdM’s Taylor Fogarty and Camellia Edalat, the No. 3 seeds, will No. 2-seeded Yuki Asami and Celine Gruaz from University.
The Sea Kings’ Elena Fish lost to Judy Kam of University, 8-6, in the first round but is in the consolation singles semifinals, as are Emily Fujita and Paige Kenerson in the consolation doubles draw. CdM’s Shelby Anderson and Erica Chen won one round then fell to Uni’s Asami and Gruaz, 6-1, 6-3.

Sunset League tournament
HUNTINGTON BEACH — Newport Harbor High’s Kendall Cosenza and Anna Burke won twice Wednesday at Huntington Beach High to advance to the semifinals.
Burke and Cosenza, the No. 3 seeds, defeated a team from Marina, 8-5, in their first match before topping the No. 6 seeds from Fountain Valley, Ruth Nguyen and Vivian Nguyen, 6-3, 6-4, in the quarterfinals.
Burke and Cosenza will play No. 2-seeded Sydney Bott and Erika Cheng of Los Alamitos, the defending champions, at 1 p.m. Thursday at Seal Beach Tennis Center.
Newport’s Jenn Kingsley, the No. 5 seed, advanced to the singles quarterfinals before losing to No. 3-seeded Jennifer Lu of Los Al, 6-2, 6-0. Newport’s Nicole Knickerbocker, the No. 6 seed, fell to No. 4-seeded Caroleen Fararji of Los Alamitos in a marathon quarterfinal match, 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 7-10.

Orange Coast League tournament
Estancia junior Kinley Ohland advanced to the semifinals in singles action, winning her first round and quarterfinal matches at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center on Wednesday.
Estancia’s Karina Catalano and Eden Steel each qualified for the quarterfinals in singles play, while the Eagles’ doubles team of Morgan Miller and Lauren Weisser, and Andrea Ponce and Mikaela Soriano also reached the quarterfinals.
The league semifinals and finals are on Thursday at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center, starting at 2 p.m.

Sage Hill’s Jaclyn Gerschultz placed third in singles Wednesday at The Tennis Club Newport Beach.
The Lightning doubles team of Connie Yu and Amira Tarsadia placed fourth in league. Isabella Deckey was fifth in singles.

Jon Polos scored four goals for the Sea Kings in Wednesday’s Pacific Coast League match at home on senior day.
Jack Barden and Connor Turnbow-Lindenstadt each scored three goals for CdM (17-3, 8-0 in league), ranked No. 5 in CIF Southern Section Division 1. Brendan Hack, Garrett Spruth and Foster Hoose each scored twice.
CdM competes in the NorCal Invitiational in San Jose this weekend.

Sage Hill def. Brethren Christian
HUNTINGTON BEACH — Senior outside hitter Halland McKenna finished with nine kills, helping the Lightning clinch the program’s first outright Academy League championship in school history with a 25-10, 25-9, 25-15 sweep on the road Wednesday.
Sage Hill (16-3, 11-0 in league) has won four league titles, the previous three it shared.
Maddy Abbott had seven service aces and 26 assists for the Lightning, while Kekai Whitford produced seven kills and three aces. Giordana Ricci added six kills.
Sage Hill, ranked No. 1 in the CIF Southern Section Division 3AA poll, closes out league play at home against Crean Lutheran on Friday at 5:30 p.m.

Katie Craig recorded 16 kills for the Sea Kings, who clinched the outright Pacific Coast League title with a 25-17, 25-20, 24-26, 25-15 win at home on Wednesday.
Jessie Harris finished with 15 kills and Natalia Bruening 14 kills for CdM (19-3, 9-0 in league), ranked No. 4 in the CIF Southern Section Division 1AA poll.
Next for the Sea Kings is the two-day Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions, which starts on Friday.
