High School Roundup: Ferrell takes second in Sunset League
Newport Harbor High junior Grace Ferrell finished second in the Sunset League finals after shooting one-under-par 69 on the Mesa Linda course at Costa Mesa Country Club Tuesday.
Ferrell was recently named Sunset League MVP based on results in league matches and the league finals, Sailors Coach Scott Tarnow said. It was her second straight league MVP award. She led Orange County with 12 medalist finishes this season.
Ferrell advances to the CIF Southern Section Southern Individual Regional Monday at Dad Miller Golf Course in Anaheim. She collected three birdies Tuesday. She shot one-over 38 Monday on the Los Lagos front nine at Costa Mesa.
“Grace has everything you want to see in a golfer,” Tarnow said. “She works extremely hard. Her family is super supportive. She works on all the little things. She doesn’t get rattled. Never a negative with her. She’s just about the next shot, the next hole. Perfect demeanor. Her goal is to go to state. Last year she got to the second round.”
Lilia Vu of Fountain Valley won the Sunset League finals by three strokes as she shot 66 Tuesday and 38 on Monday.
Vu and Ferrell were battling throughout most of the league finals, until the par-four 16th, Tarnow said. That’s where Vu chipped in for eagle and Ferrell bogeyed.
The top eight from the Sunset League moved on to the Southern Regional. Newport Harbor’s Madison Fernandez finished 11th after she shot 45-83—128.
