High School Roundup: NHHS girls’ tennis scores big win over Los Al

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Newport Harbor 12, Los Alamitos 6

Senior Jenn Kingsley swept at No. 1 singles for the Sailors in Thursday’s battle for first place in the Sunset League at Newport Harbor High.

Seniors Kendall Cosenza and Anna Burke swept at No. 1 doubles for the Sailors (9-1, 3-0 in league), as did juniors Taryn Anderson and Eva Newsom at No. 3 doubles.

Los Alamitos is the three-time defending league champion, and the Sailors had not beaten the Griffins in four years. The rematch is Oct. 20 at the Los Alamitos courts.

Newport Harbor plays at Marina on Tuesday.

Costa Mesa 14, Godinez 4

SANTA ANA — Senior Christine Tfay swept all three of her sets 6-1 for the Mustangs in Thursday’s Orange Coast League road match.

Seniors Caitlin Wase and Sylvia Catania swept, 6-1, 6-1, 6-0 in doubles for Costa Mesa (8-4, 2-2 in league).

The Mustangs play at rival Estancia on Tuesday in the first Battle for the Bell match.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Corona del Mar def. Woodbridge

IRVINE — Kendall Kipp recorded 13 kills to lead the Sea Kings to a 23-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-23 Pacific Coast League-opening win on Thursday.

Jessie Harris (11 kills), Alex Osterberg (eight kills) and Ashley Humphreys (13 digs) also contributed for CdM (11-1, 1-0 in league), which plays host to Beckman on Wednesday.

GIRLS’ GOLF

Newport Harbor 220, Fountain Valley 237

FOUNTAIN VALLEY — Grace Ferrell shot even-par 36 to earn medalist honors for the Sailors in the Sunset League match at Mile Square Golf Course on Thursday.

Tehya Corona (43), Nicole Nesbitt (46), Madison Fernandez (47) and Teanna Herrera (48) also scored for Newport Harbor (5-5, 3-3 in league).

Corona del Mar 209, Woodbridge 215

Amy Matsuoka shot one-under-par 34 to earn medalist honors for the Sea Kings in the Pacific Coast League match at Newport Beach Country Club on Thursday.

Celine Niu (36), Gabby Finear (44), Sophie Song (47) and Gia Finear (48) also scored for CdM (10-1, 6-0 in league), which suffered its first loss of the season on Tuesday against San Clemente.

Standout Alyaa Abdulghany returns to the Sea Kings next week after competing abroad.

FIELD HOCKEY

Newport Harbor 2, Marina 1

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Mckenzie Porteous and Bridget Nolan scored for the Sailors in the Sunset League game on Thursday.

Trudy Padden added an assist for Newpor Harbor (11-1-1, 3-1 in league).

The Sailors play host to Huntington Beach on Tuesday.
