College Roundup: UCI’s Fernandez finishes seventh in Fresno

FRESNO — Senior Pete Fernandez finished seventh to help UC Irvine finish tied for third in the event that concluded Tuesday at Sunnyside Country Club.
The Anteaters shared third with Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and Santa Clara, 22 shots behind victorious Pacific.
Fernandez shot par 72 in the final round to wind up at five-under (211) over 54 holes in the Anteaters’ first tournament of the season.
Junior Jacob Schulze (11th at 214) and sophomore Bryan Shin (19th at 217) also stood out for the Anteaters, who compete Saturday and Sunday in the Southern Dunes Collegiate Invitational, hosted by the University of Wyoming, at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club in Maricopa, Ariz.

LAS VEGAS, Nev. — The No. 4-ranked Anteaters rallied to tie in the 80th minute and scored in the second overtime to stay unbeaten on Sunday at the UNLV Rebel Classic.
Gor Kirakosyan scored on an assist from Cameron Iwasa to force overtime and Lalo Calzada cashed in an assist from Mats Bjurman to allow UCI to improve to 8-0-1.
Michael Breslin had five saves for the winners, who posted an 18-11 advantage in shots.
Utah Valley is 4-3.

Vanguard 3, Concordia 2 (OT)
The unranked host Lions overcame a 1-0 deficit and scored in the second overtime to upset the No. 17-ranked Eagles in the Golden State Athletic Conference game on Saturday.
Luis Valdivia scored the game-winner in the 106th minute, as Luke Cadillak and Zac Way were credited with assists.
Samer Mahmood converted a penalty kick in the 78th minute to allow Vanguard to pull even, 1-1, and Jesus Fregoso converted an assist by Hector Garcia in the 87th minute to put the Lions (5-4-1, 1-1 in conference) ahead.
But Concordia (5-3, 1-1) scored in the 88th minute to force overtime.
Brandon Gomez had 11 saves for Vanguard.

Cal State Northridge def. UC Irvine
The visiting Matadors rallied for a 23-25, 15-25, 25-16, 26-16, 16-14 Big West Conference victory on Saturday.
Cassidy Pickrell had 18 kills to lead UCI, for which Shelley Anderson had 50 assists and Arden Davis had 19 digs.
UCI fell to 10-6, 0-2 in conference.
Northridge is 11-3, 2-0.

The visiting Lions were bested, 25-14, 19-25, 25-18, 26-24, in the Golden State Athletic Conference match Saturday.
Sarah McKinney had 11 kills and Jessica Neves had 10 for the No. 21-ranked Lions (15-6, 4-2 in conference).
No. 3-ranked Concordia is 18-1, 5-0.
