College Roundup: VU men’s soccer edges Marymount

Vanguard 3, Marymount 2

Brian Torres scored two goals and Luke Kadillak netted the gamewinner in the 57th minute of the nonconference match Friday at Vanguard.

Zac Way assisted on Kadillak’s goal. Kadillak also contributed two assists for the Lions (2-0).

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Concordia tournament

Vanguard University swept two matches at home on Friday in the Concordia Labor Day Classic.

The No. 22-ranked Lions handled Concordia of Nebraska, 25-23, 25-23, 25-21, in the morning, then displatched Carroll, 25-11, 25-12, 25-21.

Jessica Neves had eight kills to pace the Lions against Concordia, against which Lauren Hayes had 21 assists and Kelly Heenan had 11 digs.

Against Carroll, Jessica Chase led the Lions (4-3) with 10 kills, with Neves adding 10.

In the second match, Hays produced 30 assists and Heenan, a Newport Harbor High product, had 13 digs.

Xavier def. UC Irvine

CINCINNATI, Ohio — Senior Allison Lee led the Anteaters with 13 kills and added 11 digs, but Xavier won, 23-25, 25-15, 25-20, 25-14 in the opening match at the Queen City Classic, co-hosted by Cincinnati and Xavier.

Shelley Anderson had 11 digs to go along with 36 assists and four kills. Marisa Bubica put away 12 kills while Arden Davis totaled 14 digs.

UCI takes on Cincinnati Saturday at 9 a.m. and ends the tournament against Duquesne at 3 p.m.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Auburn 3, UC Irvine 0

AUBURN, Ala. — The Anteaters drew its second straight 3-0 defeat at the hands of the host of the Auburn Soccer Classic, Auburn Tigers, Friday night in front of 1,078 fans at Auburn Soccer Complex.

Auburn (2-1-0) held the advantage through the first half with a 7-0 shot advantage including four on target, but Jenn Randazzo and the defense kept the match scoreless.

UC Irvine (0-3-0) managed one shot from freshman Grayson Galbraith in the final minute along with its lone corner kick. The Tigers had 17 shots and 11 corner kicks.

Randazzo finished the match with seven saves giving her 17 for the season.

UCI will finish up the Auburn Soccer Classic on Sunday with a 10 a.m. match against Indiana.

Orange Coast 1, San Diego Mesa 1

VENTURA — The Pirates opened their season with the deadlock in the Ventura Tournament at Ventura College.
