Briefs: Kapana stars as USA advances to semis

Newport Harbor High incoming senior Carlee Kapana made 19 saves in goal as the U.S. women’s youth national water polo team topped the Netherlands, 6-4, on Friday in the quarterfinals of the FINA Youth World Championships in Madrid, Spain.

CdM incoming junior Maddie Musselman had two assists and drew three ejections. The team also features Brianna Daboub, a Newport Beach resident and Mater Dei High graduate who is bound for USC.

Team USA plays Greece in the tournament semifinals Saturday at 7:30 a.m. Pacific time. Greece won the inaugural Youth Worlds tournament in December, 2012.

Locals take bronze at SoCal Swimming Summer Junior Olympic finals

Griffin Burke, Sawyer Farmer, Dominik Folkner and Jason Trzeciecki, all from Newport Harbor High, were part of the Newport Beach Swimming club’s bronze-medal team in the boys’ 15-and-over 200-meter freestyle relay at the Southern California Swimming Summer Junior Olympic Championships in Mission Viejo recently.

Burke and Farmer are incoming juniors at Newport Harbor, while Folkner and Trzeciecki will be seniors. Newport Beach Swimming is coached by Trevor Basil.

Sixteen swimmers from Newport Beach Swimming qualified for the Southern California Swimming Summer Junior Olympic Championships.
