Breakdown: The Orange Coast League and the Pacific Coast League are no longer both in the CIF Southern Section Southern Division, but they meet Friday night in the season opener for both Costa Mesa and Northwood … The OCL is still in the Southern Division but the PCL, which features Corona del Mar, moved up to the Southwest Division … Costa Mesa, which is expected to start mostly juniors on both sides of the ball, has lost 12 straight season openers since 2001 … This is just the Mustangs’ third game against Northwood and first since 2001, Costa Mesa’s final year in the PCL … The teams split their two league matchups in 2000 and ’01 before Costa Mesa moved to the Golden West League … The Timberwolves finished 3-7 last year and 2-3 in league, failing to make the playoffs … Longtime assistant Dean Toohey is the new Northwood head coach … Rick Curtis, who had been Northwood’s only head coach since the school opened in 1999, left for Santa Margarita after legendary coach Harry Welch retired.
