Briefs: Brown bound for OCC
Parker Brown, the 2012 Daily Pilot Newport-Mesa Dream Team Player of the Year as a senior boys’ volleyball standout at Corona del Mar High, has left UCLA and plans to play at Orange Coast College next season, OCC Coach Travis Turner announced.
Brown, a 6-foot-3 outside hitter, did not play last season at UCLA, which won a recruiting battle for his services over USC and Pepperdine.
Brown amassed 408 kills and 44 aces for the Sea Kings in 2012, when he earned first-team All-CIF Southern Section laurels and was the Pacific Coast League Co-MVP. Brown led the Sea Kings to the section Division 2 final in 2012, after helping Coach Steve Conti’s squad earn national, Southern California and section titles in 2011.
Brown was a two-time Dream Team performer, who also starred at the Newport Beach-based Balboa Bay Volleyball Club.
Turner said Brown should be a factor for the Pirates, who won the California Community College Athletic Assn. state championship last spring and finished 20-1.
Turner also announced the four-year destinations of several members of the 2014 unit.
Brendan Duff and Ryan Manoogian, will continue their careers at Concordia University and Long Beach State, respectively.
Duff led the state with 699 assists and was the MVP of the state tournament as a sophomore in 2014.
Manoogian, who led the Pirates in digs as a freshman last season, joins former Pirates Chris Van Vuuren and Cody Martin with the 49ers, coached by former OCC standout and former U.S. national team head man Alan Knipe.
Former OCC players Alejandro DeMendoza and Ricky Lopez have chosen the respective homes of Limestone College, a Division II program in North Carolina, and Hope International, an NAIA school in Fullerton, next season.

Coburn tops field
UC Irvine alumnus Jeff Coburn won the Southern California Golf Assn. Public Links Championship for the second straight year on Sunday at River Ridge Golf Club in Oxnard.
Coburn, a 2003 UCI graduate, finished with a 54-hole total of 12-under-par 204 to win the title by seven shots. Coburn had rounds of 69, 64 and 71 on the Victoria Lakes and Vineyard courses in the competition conducted Friday through Sunday.
His eight-under round of 64 Saturday gave him a nine-shot lead.
“It was definitely attack mode,” said Coburn on the SCGA website in discussing his round of 64 Saturday when he fired seven birdies, one eagle and had just one bogey. “But entering the final round of play with such a big lead, I figured pars would do it so I definitely played more tentatively.”
Coburn was the 2003 Big West Conference Athlete of the Year in men’s golf after he was medalist at the conference tournament in leading the ‘Eaters to their third consecutive conference title. He also earned PING All-West Region honors that season.
Ryan O’Connor, who is entering his sophomore season at UCI, finished 13th in Oxnard with a three-round score of 220.
