Coop commits to San Diego State
Corona del Mar High incoming junior girls’ lacrosse player Jensen Coop has verbally committed to San Diego State, she confirmed Thursday night.
“I went to their camp this summer and I loved it,” Coop said. “I loved the girls, the campus and the coaches. I had so much fun with everybody.”
Coop is a good get for the Aztecs. She only started playing lacrosse seriously in eighth grade but has proved a quick learner. Last year, as a sophomore midfielder, she led CdM with 50 goals and also had a team-best 66 draw controls. She helped the Sea Kings (10-7, 7-3 in league) finish tied for second in the Pacific Coast League and advance to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Lacrosse Southern Section South Division playoffs.
Coop earned first-team all-league and second-team All-Orange County laurels, the latter honor chosen by the OC chapter of U.S. Lacrosse.
“It’s awesome,” Coop said of committing to San Diego State. “I’ve never felt anything like this before. It’s more pride, I would say. I’ve worked really hard for this. This is my goal.”
For the first time in program history, CdM has two Division 1 commits on the roster at the same time. Another incoming junior, Kennedy Mulvaney, has committed to Fresno State.
Prior to this year, the only CdM girls’ player to go on to play NCAA Division 1 was Molly Rovzar, who plays for Colorado.
“We’re still the same players and the same people, but I don’t know, I think it’s really cool that the numbers are starting to build up [at CdM] as the years go on,” Coop said. “Slowly, but surely.”
