Newport Lightning under-13 Black win tourney in Garden Grove
The Newport Lightning Basketball Club’s under-13 Black team continued its strong season by claiming another championship last weekend at the Summer Finale Tournament in Garden Grove, making it three tournament titles in a row for the club.
The Lightning won the under-14 division championship playing up as seventh graders at the MAP Facility and beat the Compton Magic, OC Select and Real Run in the process.
The Lightning avenged an earlier loss in the tournament to the Compton Magic by coming from behind to win the championship game on John Humphreys’ three-pointer in the corner and ensuing blocked shot on the defensive end to lead the Lightning to the crown.
Humphreys, who averaged 18 points and 11 rebounds per game, led the team. Danny Hatch led the team in assists and steals, while Charlie Levis, Ethan Garbers and Justin Lin operated in the paint by rebounding, scoring and defending bigger players all weekend. Shane Premer and Troy Smith both hit big shots and played extremely well for the Lightning.
