Briefs: Newport Beach resident wins cycling race

Newport Beach resident David Stanton, a member of a four-man cycling team, won the Race Across America, known as the “World’s Toughest Bicycle Race,” in the 50-59 age category.

Stanton and his team finished third overall in the 34th edition of the Race Across America. The event began in Oceanside, Calif., on June 20, and it ended 3,000 miles and 12 states later in Annapolis, Md., where Stanton and his team crossed the finish line in six days, eight hours and 49 minutes.

Stanton, a practicing physician in Orange and Irvine, has been cycling since 2011. The former high school wrestler and college golfer is preparing for the National Finals in Ogden, Utah, on Sept. 9.

Hiura lauded again

UC Irvine outfielder Keston Hiura added to his postseason accolades by being named first-team Freshman All-American by Baseball America and Freshman All-American by D1 Baseball.

Hiura previously was named second-team All-West Region by the American Baseball Coaches’ Assn., and received Freshman All-American laurels from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Assn. and Collegiate Baseball. He was also named the top freshman position player in the Big West Conference.

He hit .330 and led the Big West with 52 runs batted in. He was second in the league with 75 hits while scoring 40 runs. Hiura, who finished with seven home runs and 18 doubles, led UCI with 15 multiple-RBI games and posted a team-best 19-game hitting streak in 2015.
