CdM’s Furey wins first AJGA tournament

YORBA LINDA — Chase Furey, an incoming junior at Corona del Mar High, claimed his first American Junior Golf Assn. tournament, shooting even-par 213 at the Yang Foundation Junior at Yorba Linda Country Club on Thursday.

Furey finished at one-under-par 70 in his final round, helping him place ahead of Wei Wei Gao and Kyle Suppa by three strokes.

“I was just hitting really good shots and giving myself great opportunities for birdies,” said Furey, who birdied Nos. 13 through 17, in a press release. “It is just really special to win my first tournament so close to home.”

Furey shot 74 and 69 in the first two rounds.

Newport Beach resident Chad Deegan, who played for Servite last season as a freshman, was tied for 46th at 231.
