Briefs: CdM’s Schwartz commits to UCLA

Just this month, JT Schwartz became the second Newport Beach baseball player to commit to a Pacific-12 Conference school.

Schwartz, an incoming sophomore shortstop at Corona del Mar High, said he has verbally committed to UCLA.

As a freshman, Schwartz, who bats left-handed, hit .380 and led the team with 16 runs batted in and 35 hits, and his 18 runs tied him for the top spot. He earned Daily Pilot Newport-Mesa Dream Team and second-team All-Pacific Coast League accolades.

Bock, a future senior at Sage Hill School, committed to UC Berkeley.

OC Riptide Aquatics holding tryouts

The OC Riptide Aquatics swim team will be holding its annual open tryouts on Aug. 4 from 5-7 p.m. at Ocean View High’s pool in Huntington Beach.

Tryouts will be held by age group. Ages 7-8 will tryout from 5-5:30 p.m., ages 9-10 from 5:30-6 p.m., ages 11-12 from 6-6:30 p.m. and ages 13-14 and 15 and up from 6:30-7 p.m.

Swimmers invited to join can register on deck that day and choose either August or September as a start date. OC Riptide Aquatics is led by head coach Vladi Sapozhkov, who has 40 years of coaching experience developing athletes from childhood all the way to Olympic competitors.
