Briefs: Sage’s Bock commits to Cal

Sage Hill School incoming senior Conner Bock has committed to UC Berkeley’s baseball program, said Dave, Bock’s father.

Bock, an All-CIF Southern Section Division 6 selection, led Sage Hill to its first undefeated Academy League title in school history and first quarterfinals appearance in the playoffs since 2010. Bock, a left-hander, played first base and in the outfield, and pitched for the Lightning (20-7, 12-0 in league).

Bock, a three-time Daily Pilot Newport-Mesa Dream Team and first-team All-Academy League member, batted .333 and led the area in home runs (six), runs batted in (34), runs (31) and slugging percentage (.717). He finished with four triples, four doubles and stoles 16 of 19 bases.

As a pitcher, Bock was 4-3 with a 2.37 earned-run average. He had 47 strikeouts in 38 1/3 innings.

UC Irvine’s Bryan Shin qualifies for U.S. Amateur

UC Irvine’s Bryan Shin qualified for the U.S. Amateur Championship following his performance Monday in the sectional qualifier.

Shin was the top qualifier from the sectional at Mission Viejo Country Club with a 36-hole score of 1-over 143 on rounds of 70-73.

The U.S. Amateur is scheduled for Aug. 17-23 at Olympia Fields Country Club in Olympia Fields, Ill.

The first two days feature stroke play with the top 64 advancing to match-play competition over the next five days, culminating with a 36-hole championship final Aug. 23.

The first three days of match play (Aug. 19-21) will be televised on FOX Sports 1 with the final two days on FOX (Aug. 22-23).

Shin, who will be a junior at UCI this fall, had a top finish of second at the Del Walker Intercollegiate last March. He also posted four top-20 finishes during the season, including 12th at the Big West Conference Championship that UCI won.

OC Blues’ Suggs honored

The Orange County Blues FC defender Josh Suggs earned a spot on the United Soccer League’s Team of the Week.

Despite playing a man down, Suggs helped the Blues come away with a 1-1 draw at the LA Galaxy II last Thursday.

Suggs and the Blues (7-8-3) return to action on Saturday, when they play host to the Real Monarchs SLC (2-9-6) at UC Irvine at 7 p.m. The Blues are in sixth place in the Western Conference, while the Monarchs are in last.

OC Blues sign Blanco

The Orange County Blues FC has signed veteran midfielder Milton Blanco, who made his debut with the Blues last Thursday in a 1-1 draw against the LA Galaxy II.

Blanco, who played at Fresno Pacific University in 2004, has played with the Fresno Fuego of the USL Premier Development League, as well as with the Puerto Rico Islanders, Harrisburg City Islanders and the Austin Aztex U23. Blanco was a member of Chivas USA, formerly of Major League Soccer, during the club’s inaugural season in 2005.

Blanco comes from the Arizona United SC, a member of the United Soccer League, a third-division professional league in North America. The Blues, who play at UC Irvine, are also a part of the USL.

“I am delighted to add Milton to the Blues, as his experience and leadership will enhance the quality and professionalism of the team,” said Oliver Wyss, the coach and general manager of the Blues, in a statement.
