Briefs: Cupido scores three for Team USA
TORONTO, Canada — Newport Harbor High graduate Luca Cupido scored three goals as the U.S. men’s senior national water polo team beat Argentina, 14-3, in its final group play game of the Pan American Games on Saturday.
The U.S., which beat Ecuador and Cuba earlier in the tournament, finished group play undefeated. Team USA will play Canada in a Pan Am semifinal match on Monday at either 3 or 5 p.m. Pacific Standard Time.
Team USA also has Corona del Mar High product John Mann, a 2012 Olympian, on the team. Tony Azevedo led Team USA on Saturday with five goals.
With Brazil already in the other semifinal and qualified for next summer’s Olympic Games, the United States match with Canada could very well determine the Olympic qualifier from the Pan American Games for the 2016 Olympic Games.
