NHBA 9-and-under team makes history
LOS ALAMITOS — Andrew Miehe threw a no-hitter, striking out eight in a 13-0 win against Irvine on Sunday, helping the Newport Harbor Baseball Assn. 9-and-under All-Star team become the first in the program’s history to win the PONY West Zone Central Region District Tournament championship.
Newport Harbor went 3-0 during the three-day tournament at St. Hedwig in Los Alamitos. Newport Harbor defeated Placentia B, 15-2, and St. Hedwig, 15-4, on the first two days, before Miehe’s four-inning performance clinched the team’s berth into the West Zone Central Region Tournament finals at Placentia on July 9-13.
For winning the Pony West Zone Central Region District Tournament, Newport Harbor skipped the section tournament.
Other key Newport Harbor players included Johnny Elliott, Bryson Shea, Bode Stefano, Riggs Guy, Brock Liolios and Parker Purcell.
Newport Harbor, coached by Robert Stefano, has an 18-7 record.
