Team USA makes semis at FINA World League Super Final

BERGAMO, Italy — Tony Azevedo made a penalty shot with 2.5 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter as the U.S. men’s senior national water polo team stunned Hungary, 8-7, in the quarterfinals of the FINA World League Super Final on Friday.

Newport Harbor High graduate Luca Cupido drew the penalty shot for Team USA, which has advanced to the semifinals despite three straight losses in group play. Team USA will play Croatia in the semifinals on Saturday at 11 a.m. Pacific Standard Time.

Team USA is still in the mix for an automatic berth to the 2016 Olympic Games, which is awarded to the Super Final winner.

Cupido and Corona del Mar High product John Mann each scored a goal against Hungary. Azevedo led the team with three goals.
