Notre Dame football offers CdM’s Bush walk-on spot
Peter Bush could be the second member of his family to be a preferred walk-on football player at the University of Notre Dame.
Bush, an incoming senior quarterback at Corona del Mar High, has a preferred walk-on offer from the Fighting Irish, said Bush’s father, Blaine, in an email on Friday.
Bush, who played quarterback and tight end last season, attended Notre Dame’s recent football camp. Bush’s brother, Sam, a former Newport Harbor and Mater Dei standout, is an incoming sophomore offensive lineman with the Irish.
Other schools interested in Bush, a 6-foot-1, 214-pounder, are Colorado State, Montana State, Michigan and Illinois.
Bush is competing for CdM’s starting quarterback job with future junior Chase Garbers. Last year, Bush suffered an ankle injury in a Pacific Coast League opener, and Garbers started five of the last six games as the signal caller for the Sea Kings (10-2, 5-0 in league), who went undefeated in league for the third straight year and reached the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section Southwest Division playoffs.
As a junior, Bush completed 74 of 121 passes for 993 yards and six touchdowns, with three interceptions, and rushed 71 times for 242 yards and seven TDs. He moved to tight end, finishing with four receptions for 47 yards.
