Knapp, Fernandez reach Cal State Am quarterfinals
Jake Knapp and Pete Fernandez Jr., both of Costa Mesa, have reached the match play quarterfinals of the 104th California Amateur Championship at Lake Merced Golf Course in Daly City.
Knapp, a former Estancia High standout and a UCLA senior-to-be, is matched up against Joshua Sedeno of Roseville, starting at 7:50 a.m. on Friday.
Knapp, who played in his first U.S. Open last week, defeated Shintaro Ban of San Jose, 3 and 2, in the round of 16 on Thursday.
Knapp beat William Brueckner of Oakland, 2 and 1, in the round of 32 on Wednesday.
In stroke play, Knapp finished tied for second, going 5-under-par 139 (68-71), three strokes behind the medalist Satch Herrmann of Ventura.
Fernandez, out of UC Irvine, who finished runner-up in the Big West Conference tournament, will go up against Shotaro Ban of San Jose in a quarterfinal starting at 7:30 a.m. on Friday.
Fernandez defeated Hermann, 3 and 2, in the round of 16 on Thursday.
Fernandez outlasted Perry Cohen of La Jolla in 21 holes in the round of 32 on Wednesday.
Fernandez was tied for 12th in stroke play at even (72-72).
