Brian Campbell of Irvine entered the third round of the U.S. Open with great confidence. You could say he was humbled by Chambers Bay Golf Course on Saturday.

The former Mater Dei standout and recent graduate of University of Illinois shot 8-over-par 78 in the third round to fall from tied for 12th to tied for 46th, as he is 7-over (67-72-78) in University Place, Wash.

Campbell, who shared the lead briefly during the second round, was just two shots off the lead after firing a 3-under in the first round, tied for fourth.

But after seven bogeys, one double bogey and just one birdie in the third round, he dropped way down on the leaderboard.

He’ll play with Thomas Aiken of South Africa in the final round Sunday, starting at 9:34 a.m. on No. 1.

Jason Day, Dustin Johnson, Branden Grace and Jordan Spieth share the lead at -4.
