Hiura adds honor

UC Irvine freshman Keston Hiura’s postseason resume continued to lengthen after the outfielder was named second-team All-West Region by the American Baseball Coaches Assn.

Hiura, one of two freshmen selected to the squad, caught the attention of several baseball publications after a banner first year for the Anteaters that included Big West Freshman Field Player of the Year recognition. He paced the conference with 52 runs batted in and 118 total bases and was second in hits with 75.

Hiura was also fifth in slugging (.520), seventh in batting (.342), eighth in runs scored (40) and third in doubles (18).

He etched his name into UCI’s freshman records, setting a new record with seven home runs as well rewriting the marks for runs scored, total bases and hits.

Hiura was a two-time Big West Player of the Week and earned Freshman All-American laurels from Collegiate Baseball and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Assn.

OCC No. 12 in state

Orange Coast College finished 11th among 54 California schools in the National Alliance of Two-Year College Athletic Administrators Cup, based on an overall-point system for sports programs at each school.

The Pirates accumulated 110.5 points among their 22 men’s and women’s sports, topped by a 20-point windfall for winning the state championship in baseball.

Other top contributors were women’s swimming (19 points), men’s cross country (18), men’s water polo (15.5), men’s swimming (14) and men’s volleyball (10).

Mt. San Antonio was first with 187.5 points, followed by Cerritos (161.5) and American River (152).

Golden West topped the Orange Empire Conference representatives in the No. 9 spot, with Irvine Valley (No. 12) and Fullerton (No. 19) also cracking the top 20.
