Baseball: Lions’ boys of summer
All-Golden State Athletic Conference honorees Jose Rojas, Sean Isaac and Brandon Sandoval are among nine Vanguard University baseball players competing in collegiate summer leagues.
Rojas, who hit .320 with 12 home runs, 57 runs batted in and 13 stolen bases to help the Lions reach the NAIA World Series for the first time in 30 years as a junior shortstop, is playing for the Swift Current Indians (Saskatchewan, Canada.) in the Western Baseball League.
Isaac, who was 10-5 with a 2.76 earned-run average as a junior in 2015, is competing with Kalamazoo (Mich.) Growlers in the Northwoods League.
Sandoval, who hit .295 with one homer, 28 RBIs and 38 stolen bases as a sophomore outfielder in 2015, is playing for the Edenton (N.C.) Steamers of the Coastal Plains League.
Brock Eissman, a junior starting outfielder in 2015, is playing for the Hornell Dodgers in the New York Collegiate League.
Kevin Bettencourt, the Lions starting catcher as a junior in 2015, is toiling with Rojas with Swift Current.
Additionally, Lions Roberto Johnson and Matt Silberman are playing with the Newport Beach Riptide of Orange County in the Southern California Collegiate League. The Riptide plays its home games at Vanguard.
Michael Jordan is also with the Hornell Dodgers, while Shaniel Rivera is pitching for the Danbury (Conn.) Westerners in the New England Collegiate League.
