Locals in Ryan Lemmon All-Star baseball festivities
Newport Harbor High pitchers Shaun Vetrovec and Connor Seabold highlight two of nine local baseball players participating in the Ryan Lemmon All-Star festivities at Windrow Park in Irvine on Friday and Saturday.
Vetrovec and Seabold made the senior All-Star game between the Sunset League and Century League on Friday, along with Newport Harbor catcher Tk McWhertor. The three represent the Sunset League, and Newport Harbor Coach Evan Chalmers is one of the coaches.
Corona del Mar pitcher Brett Olson, catcher Sam Younesi and pitcher Tyler Duncan are in Saturday’s senior All-Star game between the Pacific Coast League and the Freeway League at 4:30 p.m. The trio is on the Pacific Coast League team, which features CdM Coach John Emme.
Sage Hill first baseman Conner Bock and Newport Harbor’s Luke Genova, an outfielder and designated hitter, and first baseman Jake Genova are in the Sophomore Showcase on Saturday at 9 a.m.
Vetrovec and Seabold, both first-team All-Sunset League selections, led the Sailors (13-14, 6-9 in league) to the wild-card round of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs, the program’s first postseason appearance since 2010.
Vetrovec went 7-4 record with a 1.16 earned-run average. He tossed seven complete games, two for shutouts, and struck out 100 in 72 1/3 innings.
Vetrovec, bound for UC Irvine, batted .346 with 16 runs batted in and five doubles.
Vetrovec made his second All-Star game, the first was last week’s Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim’s 47th Orange County North-South All-Star Game for seniors.
Seabold, who was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles with the 571st pick in the 19th round, went 4-7 with a 3.50 ERA and 72 strikeouts in 60 innings. He threw four complete games and recorded one save.
Seabold, a Cal State Fullerton commit, had a .424 batting average, a .473 on-base percentage, a .482 slugging percentage, 20 runs and five doubles. He also starred in center field.
McWhertor hit .305 with 10 RBIs and five doubles.
Luke Genova was a second-team All-Sunset League member.
Olson, a first-team All-Pacific Coast League pick, led CdM (8-17, 6-9 in league). The Auburn-bound player finished 5-4 with a 3.28 ERA, and he hit .342 with 10 RBIs and seven doubles.
Younesi and Duncan are second-team All-Pacific Coast League selections.
Bock, a first-team All-Academy League member, lifted Sage Hill (15-7, 8-4 in league) to the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division 6 playoffs for the first time in four years.
Bock batted .456 with 29 runs batted in, three home runs, three triples and six doubles. The left-handed hitter had a .563 on-base percentage and a .764 slugging percentage, to go with 29 runs and 22 stolen bases.
