Boys’ Volleyball: Tars’ duo earns first-team honors

Newport Harbor High freshman Cole Pender and sophomore middle blocker Spencer Lawrence made the All-Sunset League first team in boys’ volleyball.

The duo contributed to the Sailors splitting second place in league and qualifying for the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs. Newport Harbor (12-13, 7-3 in league) returned to the postseason after missing it in 2014, when it ended a 28-year run of making the playoffs.

The Sailors tied Los Alamitos for second, before losing in three sets at No. 4-seeded Newbury Park in the first round.

Newport Harbor senior outside hitter Collin Schlesinger, sophomore setter Landon Monroe, senior outside hitter Grady Kimme and freshman middle blocker Ethan Talley are second-team selections.

Huntington Beach’s TJ DeFalco and Josh Tuaniga shared the Sunset League MVP award.
